Cotton Jenny was in effect for about 8 years, wearing many diverse skirts, dependand upon who was on the drummer's stool (Jeremy Gordon of Trick Sensei was the first, then there was Arturo Diaz of Slower Than and !AyClaudia!, and finally Fred Smith switched from guitar to drums and was joined by Noel Thompson on eggs, tambourine, and whatnot). At first there was SuperDave on bass, then for the longest stint those shoes were filled by Tim "Bigroot" Acock, who switched from electric to upright, therefore leading the charge into swing. Josh "Smooth White Chocolate" Boyd played theremin with us early on, when the music was more psychedelic rock. He then went away to Breitenbush Hot Springs for a number of years (again, moving us more towards jazz and swing). Then Christian Hurd joined us for a spell (of Templeton and LookBook), and with my blessing, extracted some of the less jazz-oriented pieces for the Jennifer Faust recording, Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board (moving us even ever so farther away from rock..) We were a trio for a while with no drummer, which proved very educational, and made us realize how important a good drummer is. So Fred switched to drums and it was awesome. He already knew the tunes and he was great. THEN, josh came back with theremin and vocal samples, and Noel jumped on board, and then I left town...I guess in a sense I left when musically things were at their peak for 'ol Cotton Jenny. I will forever treasure the basement rehearsals and noir shows we put on. I am presently playing several Cotton Jenny tunes while out performing solo or with a band throughout Northern California.
