Counterfeit Cash began in the months following Johnny Cash's passing from this earth, in the winter of 2003-04, performing a faithful acoustic re-creation of Johnny's landmark 1994 album, American Recordings. The duo's repertoire has since expanded to include other American-Recordings-era tunes, as well as Cash classics from the 50s, 60s, and 70s.
Vocalist Danny Coble grew up fearing God and singing hymns every Sunday at the Baptist Church. Now he worships at the Church of Karaoke, when he's not interpreting Spanish for the Criminal Injustice System. Besides Johnny Cash, his main musical influences are Prince, Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, and Barry Gibb.
Most Counterfeit Cash shows also feature the vocal talents of Jen Fitzpatrick, who brings June Carter's parts to life with soul and grit.
In mid-2007, founding guitarist Paul Brady was replaced by Danny's cousin Marcus Amorosa, who also adds piano wizardry and occasional vocals.
In recent months, the incomparable Steven Bak has been blessing us with his masterful guitar playing and some vocals as well.
Counterfeit Cash plays at Portland's very own Church of Johnny Cash, otherwise known as The Nest, on NE 18th and Alberta, the first Friday of every month. They've also played to enthusiastic Portland audiences at Produce Row, The Ash Street Saloon, Berbati's, The Tiger Bar, The White Eagle, Billy Ray's Dive, The Green Room, Slabtown, Tiny's, and Tiny's Too, as well as Sip and the late Dragonfly in Salem.
We're playing a great show with The Joe McMurrian Quartet (now Woodbrain) and Eggplant this Thursday. It's a super solid evening of rocking roots music dripping in blues and jazz. Hope to see you there! ~~C
