Like a hybrid SUV landing on Plymouth Rock, Courtenay Green's vibrant alternative pop is grounded in the past, but very much of the present. Bursting with richly textured arrangements and unique instrumentation, her songs toss elements from a host of different influences and eras into a giant musical blender. The resulting cocktail is both singular and delicious, doses of sophisticated songwriting that go down easy thanks to catchy hooks, clever lyrics, and quirky interludes. Using her skills as a drummer, guitarist, pianist, percussionist, trumpet player, and dabbler in a host of other instrument categories, Courtenay writes/arranges nearly every part of every song and co-produces all of her recordings, creating music that is unusually personal and distinct.
Since the late 2008 release of her first EP, "Mixed Message," Courtenay has taken the LA scene by storm with her 6-piece band, The Red Scare. Performing initially under her own name and more recently as See Green, she's been onstage at venues and events ranging from the Silverlake Lounge to the House of Blues to the LA Times Festival of Books, all the while receiving enthusiastic local blog attention (including an Ears Wide Open feature on Kevin Bronson's Buzz Bands in July '09). After an appearance at Cincinnati's Midpoint Music Festival on September 25th, Courtenay embarked upon an East Coast mini-tour, which she brought to a close with a packed house and spirited final set at Pianos in New York City. Now back in LA, she is hard at work on a new EP, which will mark her first release as See Green. Her latest single, "Devil in the Details," showcases some of the diverse (and synthtastic!) new musical frontiers she will be visiting on this forthcoming production. Some very exciting material is in the works, so be sure to stay tuned for updates!
THEN
Courtenay was first introduced to music through her parents' extensive classic rock collection, after which she graduated to the more subtle, musically complex works of Cyndi Lauper. By age six, she had taken up the piano, and by age seven, she had embarked upon an ultimately fruitless quest to become the 5th member of the Bangles. Greatly saddened by that band's breakup after the 1988 release of "Everything," Courtenay nevertheless continued to play and perform, eventually picking up the guitar, the trumpet, and the drums. By the time she got to high school, Courtenay was a multi-instrumentalist, a vocalist, and a songwriter, and spent much of her time atop her floral bedspread churning out angst-ridden paeans to teenage dystopia that thankfully, no one except her mother would ever hear.
After securing a social science degree from Princeton University, in no small part due to the phrases "cosmological framework" and "social control," Courtenay settled in New York, where she began to develop the unusual sensibility that characterizes her brand of pop and continued to hone her musical chops, mostly in hopes of one day using the word “hone” in a sentence. Eventually, feeling somewhat incomplete in the cliche department, Courtenay picked up and moved to Los Angeles, where she's been steadily writing, recording, and performing ever since. Which brings us to Now. Until Now is Then, of course, but she doesn't need to delve into that sort of thing at the moment.
