Influences
Each other, mostly. John and Mike Are Deadheads, Mike and Marcus are Celtic and world music buffs, Hyram and John are western swing and country enthusiasts and we all like bluegrass. Mike and John play R&B in another band and Hyram and Marcus don't. Hyram runs a music shop and John is Music HoD at a secondary school. Marcus does Natural History television - which is a big influence: "Like a gas filled frog, I floated for a week..." Mostly we are influenced by the quality of the coffee on any given day.
Sounds Like
the tightest vocal string band you've heard in a while.

Here in the 'lounge, expect to find hornless jazz, westernless country and drumless rock. Loosen that bolo tie and pull up an espresso. The most common adjective that is used to describe The Chaps is "quirky". They claim to have invented the "cowboy lounge" genre. Think Dan Hicks, Austin Lounge Lizards, Run C&W and you'd be all around it but not on it.
Formed in 1990, The Chaps claim to be the longest running kiwi band with the same line-up! Probably because no-one else would play with them and they're too scared to leave each other. The Chaps give new mean to "Old and in the Way" with over 150 years of musical experience between them.
All the Chaps are singer/songwriters in their own right and are no strangers to hurtin' good. Witness Hyram's Thank you for Leavin' Me or Marcus' laconic Sure did a Number on Me, just two tracks of their latest album Hiphopalong.
The Chaps are back from their 2nd tour of Europe (literally as far away from NZ as you can get without starting to head back!). Read about how it went at The Chaps on Tour Blog.

We invite you to listen to DIAL-A-DIVA on Saturday 8th September.
VOCAL PERFORMERS from around the world have signed up for a 24 hour arts extravaganza that's shaping up to be one of this year's cultural highlights.
DIAL-A-DIVA connects an audience and performers by telephone, for 24 hours on September 8th 2007.
Each artist's performance is transmitted via their telephone into a conference call. The audience can then dial in to listen to the phonecast. An internet webcast will also be available. The event will start in New Zealand at 8pm local time. We will follow 8pm around the world with artists participating throughout Australasia, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and the Americas. It will culminate 24 hours later as 8pm crosses the dateline once more.
