Cowboys + Zombies Dead Horse Trail (Drop Dead Records)
Dead Horse Trail, the debut EP from Cowboys + Zombies, updates the real punk blues of The Cramps, Mule and the Blues Explosion in an attempt to give voice to every 21st century malcontent too far into the bottle to lift his pathetic head off of the bar. Tracks such as "Hard Time" and "Devilish" benefit from W.D. Akins's anguished wail and dark lyrics (which recall Falkner by way of Nick Cave), the Twin Peaks roadhouse guitar interplay of Slim Chartrand and Dick Johnson and the minimalist drumming of Stick Jones. Forget about the cartoonish image perpetrated by most psychobilly or cowpunk bands--Cowboys + Zombies are the real deal. Dead Horse Trail has all of the dressed-down backwoods violence that Johnny and Hank used to sing about even as it conjures up horror show images in the George Romero/Wes Craven vein. -King Hotpants
