    CPP 2008's Interests
General"Toi la nguoi Vietnam." One of the defining hallmarks of the CPP campaign is the collaboration among students all across North America. Every aspect of our project is organized, spearheaded, hosted and supported by the Vietnamese American collegiate and youth community. Everyday, the CPP team is inundated with students from across the country looking to help the campaign and raise money for VOICE. Over the past year, the team has traveled to dozens of cities and campuses to speak about contemporary issues plaguing Vietnam, and has strengthened the friendship with student and community leaders everywhere. As of March 2008, we are extremely proud to announce that we have raised over $40,000 to combat human trafficking overseas. Though our work is far from over, we would like to take a moment to showcase the activities schools across the country are hosting to support the CPP. To view upcoming CPP events, please visit our calendar page. CPP National Kick-off: In January 2008, the CPP team hosted a national kick-off weekend to encourage students to be a part of this year’s campaign. Titled “Raise Your VOICE,” the campaign kicked off in Washington D.C., and moved on to Indiana, Seattle and San Jose, before ending in Southern California. The team enjoyed much support from the student and youth community, and in one weekend, raised over $7,500 for VOICE. Thanks to: Mid-Atlantic Union of Vietnamese Students Association Indiana University University of Washington UVSA Northern California UVSA Southern California Anh Oi Clothing Vietnamese Culture Night/Show: The Vietnamese Culture Night is organized and performed by a majority of VSA campuses nationwide. These events celebrate the Vietnamese language, tradition, dance and heritage, while also showcasing the intertwining of our two cultures. The team would like to thank the following campuses that have used their culture night and/or shows to discuss VOICE and the CPP: Union of Vietnamese Students Association - Georgia California State University Fullerton California State University Long Beach University of Southern California University of Oregon University of Maryland, College Park George Mason University Virginia Tech Ohio State Indiana University University of California, Berkeley Portland State University James Madison University University of South Carolina San Jose State University Illinois Vietnamese Student Union Tet Festivals: February 7 marked the beginning of a new year for the Vietnamese community. The year of the rat has been especially wonderful to the CPP campaign, as students from all over the country celebrated a new year with charity work. Some organizations had donation boxes throughout the festivals, and some had booths and helped pass out pamphlets about our cause. Thanks to: Southern California Tet Festival Miss Vietnam of Southern California Denver Tet Festival Boston Tet Festival Portland Tet Festival Conferences: The CPP team has been fortunate to receive opportunities to speak about human trafficking overseas at many national conferences and retreats. These events have allowed us to raise more awareness about the Vietnamese community, while strengthening our relationship with different schools. Thanks to: Georgia Tech: Charity Dinner University of California, Davis: Bike-A-Thon Union of Vietnamese Students Association Northern California Olympics Ohio State James Madison University University of Virginia Virginia Tech George Mason Charity Date Auctions: This past spring, three campuses have hosted charity date auctions that have benefitted VOICE. These events have collectively raised over $10,000 while raising awareness about human trafficking with the collegiate community. Thanks to: University of California, San Diego Virginia Commonwealth University California State University, San Bernardino
Music"What will you do if a strange woman asks you to go with her to Lang Son with promises of a good job?" a child in the jury asks of another contestant of the same age. "I would say no definitely," responds the other side. The community has dedicated its time to fighting human trafficking, a topic not discussed much in the past, with the best possible weapon: an education. This year's funds will help VOICE construct an office in Phnom Penh, Cambodia to provide resources and aide to Vietnamese women and children sold as sex slaves. Likewise, the money raised will help fund five programs VOICE will develop to educate and empower these individuals: 1. Legal Aide and Protection: The staff will ensure dissemination of relevant laws to local authorities, councils, village chiefs and communities. These documents will be made available in Khmer and in Vietnamese. Likewise, the staff will work with local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to help these victims access free legal services, assistance and representation. 2. Economic Aide and Empowerment: The staff will help young women, who are most often targets of the sex trade, obtain micro loans in order to start their own business and become financially independent. They will also monitor and guide these individuals with their business ventures via planning, budgeting, consulting and account-keeping. 3. Medical Aide: The staff will plan a medical mission in July 2008 with project HOPE to provide women and children with medical check-ups, corrective surgery and basic healthcare. 4. Education and Life-Long Learning: The staff will provide women and children with scholarships to attend school, and likewise provide programs to further supplement their education, including English and math courses, as well as arts and crafts projects and homework help. They will also provide vocational training in business management for young, at-risk women. 5. Social Development: The staff will organize communal activities to encourage a stronger sense of community and friendship among the women and children. Their goal is organize a culture show by July 2008.

Heroes"Lights will guide you home, and I will try to fix you." - According to sources from UNICEF and Vietnam's Ministry of Justice as well as other groups, as many as 400,000 Vietnamese women and children have been trafficked overseas, most since the end of the Cold War. That's around 10 percent of trafficked women and children worldwide. They are smuggled to Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, Taiwan, the Czech Republic -- and, to a lesser extent, the United States -- for commercial sexual exploitation. -In 2004, Cambodian police estimated that more than 50,000 girls were in brothels through Cambodia, many of whom were Vietnamese. -There are, at present, around 200,000 Vietnamese women in Taiwan. Most of them are 17- and 18-year-old girls trying to escape poverty by agreeing to marry Taiwanese men of various shapes and sizes. -The Vietnamese Government was placed in Tier 2 in the 2007 U.S. Department of State’s Trafficking in Persons Report for not fully complying with the Trafficking Victims Protection Act’s minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking but making significant efforts to do so. -The Vietnamese Government estimates that approximately 10 percent of the arranged marriages with Chinese men may have become trafficking victims. Many women raped and abused by their husbands and in-laws. In some cases, they are sold off to other men -The World Human Rights Organization and UNICEF estimate that one-third of the prostitutes in Cambodia are under the age of 18, the majority of whom are Vietnamese. - In 2004, Cambodian police estimated that more than 50,000 girls were in brothels through Cambodia, many of whom were Vietnamese.

About me:
Welcome to the Collective Philanthropy Project: "Open Your Eyes" by Kayoko CPP is going to Cambodia! Our team is excited to visit Phnom Penh and offer aid and support to the VOICE family, and see the fruit of our hard work this year. Look out for new blog entries July 18-24, 2008. Didn't get a chance to participate in this year's campaign? Register today for uNAVSA's conference and join our book drive from July 31-August 2, 2008. The CPP team will be collecting books for our uNAVSA library in Cambodia. Please email cpp@unavsa.org for more details. CPP has a new video with pictures from VOICE's latest trip to Cambodia. To view, please visit: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ta2VqNsDR4Q We'd also like to wish everyone good luck on upcoming finals and to say a big congratulations to all 2008 graduates! As of April 15, CPP has raised over $46,000 for VOICE!! Also, check out our blog on http://unavsacpp.blogspot.com/ The Collective Philanthropy Project was established in 2005 by the Union of North American Vietnamese Students Association to encourage the collegiate and youth community to collaborate and raise funds for one charitable cause. Since then, we have raised over $35,000 for VietAct and $49,000 for The Catalyst Foundation. This year's CPP beneficiary is the Vietnamese Overseas Initiative for Conscience Empowerment, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the underprivileged community overseas and fighting for those suffering from sexual slavery. Please check out this site to learn more about how you can help raise your VOICE against those silenced by human trafficking. Cheers, Amy and Pha-Le

Who I'd like to meet:
1 out of every 10 women and children sold as a sex slave is Vietnamese. Since the Cold War, 400,000 Vietnamese women and children have been victims of human trafficking. Some are smuggled and sold as brides across international borders to countries like South Korea, China, Taiwan and Japan. Some are sold out of extreme poverty by their families to make ends meet. These women are in their teens to mid-twenties. Some are as young as five years old. They struggle with racism, loneliness and prejudice in these countries, and face high rates of HIV/AIDS, venereal diseases and early death. However you put it, they are victims. The story of the Collective Philanthropy Project begins with a single VOICE. This year's CPP beneficiary is the Vietnamese Overseas Initiative for Conscience Empowerment, which was founded in 1997 to help resettle 2,500 stateless Vietnamese refugees trapped in the Philippines. The organization was among the first and only non-profit to provide legal aide and resources for these families. Yet in its mission to provide protection and support to the Vietnamese refugees, VOICE also uncovered disturbing statistics and stories about women and children sold into sexual slavery across Southeast and East Asia. The stories of victims silenced by suffering encouraged VOICE to take a stand and combat human trafficking in Cambodia, where Vietnamese victims are often smuggled and sold. What began as a single VOICE has grown to a national campaign spearheaded by the Union of North American Vietnamese Students Association. This is the story of how thousands of students all across this country will work to help the community overseas. This is the story of how thousands of students will help bring a brighter future and VOICE to those silenced by sexual slavery. This is our vision. "Cause tonight's the night the world begins again."
