   About Crabid Music

Crabid CDs are available at CDBaby.com

Crabid ('cra-bid). adj. 1: like a crab. 2: furious. 3: like a furious crab. 4: resembling a tiger that's acting like a furious crab.

Crabid Music was created to facilitate the recording, production, and distribution of artists who display sufficient Crabitity, as judged by the founders of Crabid Music: Chris Minnick and David Minnick.

In all seriousness, 2 members of the legendary ska band from Detroit "GANGSTER FUN" (1985-2000) have continued writing and recording music long after the band's demise. At long last, they have seen fit to start a label and put all of this music under one roof: "CRABID MUSIC". The music is of a very eclectic nature, but the humor and reckless abandon of Gangster Fun live on!!! Projects (present and future) include:

THE SURSIKS: A band dedicated to turning non-musical material into music. Their debut recording "I didn't know i was singing vol. 1" turns real answering machine messages from family and friends into songs. The notes and rhythms of the spoken messages are painstakingly figured out and songs are constructed around them (ALL PLAYED BY REAL MUSICIANS PLAYING REAL INSTRUMENTS).

The Sursiks 2nd cd (released March 28 2007), "Lydia Grace" is a collection of 13 songs written and sung by a 3 year old girl. The combination of the world-view of a 3 year old and the profoundly unique musical style of the Sursiks makes "Lydia Grace" a truly one-of-a-kind recording."I didn't know i was singing vol. 1" and "Lydia Grace" are both available on cdbaby. Follow the cdbaby link above to hear (buy) them.

The Sursiks 3rd cd is entitled "Christmas in March". The release date is December 15, 2008 "Christmas in March" is 50+ seamless minutes of music "sung" by voices from television, radio and various other sources. Commercials, news reports, self-help tapes, religious programs, pop radio-dj banter, and a host of other recordings are mixed up and set to music, in order to create extremely funny new perceptions of our media environment. The Sursiks' musical arrangements on this recording include the usual rock instruments plus a wide variety of percussion instruments, flute, saxes, trumpets and violins. "Christmas in March"will have you singing along to things you didn't think were music, and laughing the rest of the time. You've truly never heard anything like this.

ZERMOS: Three musicians show up at an undisclosed location with a recording device, press record and make up the music as they go along. "The Last Night of August" is nearly an hour of abstract, hyperactive, kaleidoscopic free improv for alto sax, bass and piano by three of Detroit's most crabid jazz musicians. Song titles include "Wax Paper", "Brushing Your Teeth While Driving" and "Watering a Dead Plant".

OVEN MITT JOHNSON: A blues guitarist whose guitar gets so "hot" when he plays, that he is forced to wear an oven mitt on his left hand. Of course, the accuracy of his playing suffers, but the passion of his playing more than makes up for it. After all, in your own life, what would YOU choose; accuracy or passion? Oven Mitt Johnson actually DID record all of the lead guitar parts on this record WITH AN OVEN MITT ON HIS LEFT HAND!! Oven Mitt Johnson's debut record "Hot Guitar" is available on cdbaby (blues).

MUDFLAP: We've seen the disco revival, the punk revival, the glam revival, and the 70s rock revival. As soon as gas prices come back down, the next logical extension of the 70s revival craze that's been going on for the last 30 years will be the return of CBs and trucker rock. A brave new band that goes by the handle Mudflap is about to put the hammer down and blaze a trail to the future. And this time, we ain't got no double nickle limit.

BUCK-O: Featuring the unique talents of Mark Johnson and Chris Minnick, Buck-o started in 1999 with the two musicians/friends who lived several thousand miles apart emailing 30 second audio files to each other and editing them however they each saw fit. Today, the members of Buck-o live within 20 miles of each other and actually get together occassionally to work on their upcoming release, which is expected to come out at some point in 2007.

Oh man if you have time for another answering machine song...  I've got an answering machine for you
About a hundred really, but one in particular that is relevant in the context of the exhibit.
Dial 248-416-6447 if Dave answers, ask him if it's ok to check the Erin message.  He'll say, "Yes" and then have ya call back to hear it by not answering the phone.

Sweet.  You come out here and I'll take ya all out to Inn Season.  That's where Erin and I had one of our most magnificent meals.  A fine San Antonia Burrito with Brown Rice Salad.

Dear fellow terrifying Artist, (that's you mister telephone machine)
An exhibit at the family-friendly Main Art Theatre is up for all patrons and saints to see through May 31st. Was offered a spot on the walls of Plymouth Coffee Bean for July and August, but the fellow in charge (Jeffree) recanted after viewing samples from the exhibit at Main Art. I would greatly appreciate your thoughts if you can make it to Main Art to view the exhibit, just north of 11 mile in our beloved Royal Oak.

Hey there,

Here's one from left field...

Ever wondered what to do in the event of a nuclear threat?

A while ago I found stuff that inspired me to make this film:

Living Under the Shadow of the Nuclear Umbrella

Both artistic (ensure you get the background music!) and educational, it primarily comprises official British government civil defence advice.

Though source materials are quite aged, much remains relevant today.

I encourage all to visit the YouTube page to learn more (Show support! Rate! Comment!) and responsibly circulate as widely as possible, here:

Help to raise awareness.

Say have you checked out my web site recently?

Take care and keep in touch.

Best,
Faber.
