LIDIA BOCCACCIO (voce, organetto, bodhràn)
Fin da giovanissima Lidia Boccaccio si appassiona alla musica irlandese e scozzese.
Nel 1986 entra a far parte dei "Birkin tree" come voce solista e, grazie all'aiuto del bodhranista del gruppo, Marcello Scotto, impara a suonare il bodhràn.
Lascia la formazione nel 1994 e fonda con l'arpista Patrizia Borromeo il duo Rhiannon. Nel corso degli anni seguenti il duo collabora con molti altri musicisti e registra per i tipi della Demetra un CD insieme al "piper" Emanuele Zanfretta.
Sciolto il duo Lidia fa alcune collaborazioni (ad esempio nel trio vocale "InCanto" e nel gruppo di musiche natalizie "L'ensamble del doppio bordone") fino all'incontro con Matteo Bargioni ed Elisa Moro con i quali fonda i Crann Ull.
MATTEO BARGIONI (violino)
Ha iniziato a interessarsi molto presto al vasto panorama della musica tradizionale per violino, compiendo viaggi in Irlanda per apprendere meglio sul luogo i vari stili di violinismo regionali; ha inoltre approfondito lo studio del repertorio tradizionale di Cape Breton. Compie studi superiori di violino classico presso il Conservatorio "Vivaldi" Alessandria, e di musica barocca per archi e cembalo presso l'Accademia "San Rocco" di Alessandria.
Matteo ha frequentato corsi e lezioni di molti tra i più grandi fiddlers di fama internazionale, tra cui Martin Hayes, Matt Cranich e Eileen Ivers ed è stato membro di alcune formazioni italiane di musica tadizionale, tra cui i "Gravel Walk". Tuttora è anche membro del gruppo di musica del Quebec "Andrea Capezzuoli e Compagnia".
ELISA MORO (piano, harp, keyboards)
Elisa ha intrapreso molto presto lo studio del pianoforte nel repertorio classico compiendo gli studi presso il Conservatorio "Vivaldi" Alessandria, e di musica barocca per archi e cembalo presso l'Accademia "San Rocco" di Alessandria. Dal 2004 si è dedicata allo studio del repertorio tradizionale di Cape Breton e del ruolo del piano nell’accompagnamento della musica irlandese. Nei suoi arrangiamenti confluiscono influenze classiche e barocche, insieme alla ricerca di nuove possibilità armoniche. Parallelalmente allo studio del pianoforte compie anche quello dell'arpa celtica.
DANIELE BICEGO (uilleann pipes, Irish flute, whistles)
Comincia a studiare musica in conservatorio dove è studente di corno, e per diversi anni collabora con orchestre sinfoniche italiane e straniere.
In seguito scopre la musica irlandese grazie a un disco della Bothy Band, e inizia a suonare le Uilleann Pipes e altri strumenti tradizionali.
Nel tempo collabora con formazioni folk e di musica antica, ma soprattutto con gruppi di musica irlandese, in particolare i Red Box con cui nei primi anni di attività ottiene parecchi consensi per il disco e per le esecuzioni dal vivo. Ha anche occasione di collaborare con musucisti italiani (Vincenzo Zitello) e internazionali (Michael McGoldrick dei Capercaillie, Tiarnàn O’Duinnchinn dei Na Dorsa, Solas) per concerti e incisioni. I suoi progetti più recenti sono basati sul repertorio tradizionale irlandese. Parallelamente all’attività musicale si dedica alla costruzione degli strumenti che suona.
Nel 2007 incide "The Year of the Snake", il suo primo cd da solista.

LIDIA BOCCACCIO (voice, button accordion, bodhran) Since a very young age she is passionate for Irish and Scottish music. In 1986 she becomes part of the “Birkin tree” as a soloist voice and thanks to the help of the Bodran player of the band, Marcello Scotto, she learns to play the instrument. She leaves the formation in 1994 and she creates with harpist Patrizia Borromeo the duo Rhiannon. In the following years the duo collaborates with many other musicians and record for Demetra a Cd with “piper” Emanuele Zanfretta.
Once the duo breaks up Lidia collaborates in various bands (ex. “InCanto” and in the Christmas music group “L’ensemble del doppio bordone”) up till her encounter with Matteo and Elisa together with which she creates “Crann Ull”.
MATTEO BARGIONI (fiddle) Became interested in the vast range of traditional Irish music for fiddle at an early age, travelling to Ireland to explore the country and the various styles of violin playing, also deepening his knowledge in Cape Breton’s traditional repertoire. Completes his senior studies in violin at the Conservatory “A.Vivaldi” in Alessandria, and in Baroque music at the San Rocco Music Academy. He has attended lessons and courses held by some of the most important violinists of international fame such as Martin Hayes, Matt Cranich and Eileen Ivers. He was a member of various Italian groups such as Gravel Walk and at the moment he plays Quebeq music with Andrea Capezzuoli e Compagnia
ELISA MORO (piano, harp, keyboards) Started playing the piano at an early age in the classic repertoire. Completes her senior studies in piano at the Conservatory “A.Vivaldi” in Alessandria, and in Baroque music at the San Rocco Music Academy. Since 2004 she has been dedicated in studying Cape Breton’s traditional repertoire and the piano’s role in accompanying Irish music. She also plays the Celtic Harp. In her arrangements there are baroque and classical influences as well as the search for new possibilities from a harmony point of view.
DANIELE BICEGO (uilleann pipes, Irish flute, whistles) Starts studying horn at the conservatory and for several years he collaborates with italian and international symphonic orchestras. Afterwards he discovers traditional irish music thanks to a Bothy Band CD, and he starts playing the Uilleann pipes and other instruments. He collaborates with folk and classical music formations , but mostly with irish music groups in particular I Red box with which, in the first few years, he obtains various appreciations for the cd and the live concerts. He also has the opportunity to collaborate with Italian (Vincenzo Zitello) and international (Michael McGoldrick -Capercaillie-, Tiarnàn O’Duinnchinn -Na Dorsa-, Solas) musicians for concerts and recordings. His most recent projects are based of traditional irish repertoire and at the same time he is dedicated to the construction of the instruments he plays. In 2007 he records “the year of the snake”, his first cd as a soloist.
I CRANN ULL sono un gruppo nato come sodalizio tra musicisti con esperienza individuale nell’ambito della musica tradizionale, accomunati da una forte passione per le sonorità e melodie tipiche delle aree di origine celtica.
Il nucleo originario nasce da un'idea di Matteo Bargioni ed Elisa Moro di arrangiare melodie tradizionali irlandesi senza disperdere la loro sensibilità di musicisti classici. Nel farlo sono rimasti affascinati dal connubio tra i loro suoni e il timbro peculiare della voce di Lidia Boccaccio, "un'interprete di grande esperienza che con la sua voce straordinaria ha contribuito a decretare il successo di numerose formazioni italiane orientate verso i suoni tradizionali dell'Irlanda e di altre aree celtiche" (Folkermesse).
Da subito un grande successo: i Crann Ull hanno tenuto numerosi concerti in Italia e sono stati invitati a partecipare a molti tra i più importanti festival di musica celtica e folk italiani, tra cui "Folkermesse" (Asti), Capodanno Celtico (Castello Sforzesco di Milano), Usseltik (Saint Vincent - Aosta), "Celtic Days Ome" (Brescia), "Magia Celtica" (Trento), Capodanno Celtico (Riolo Terme- Ravenna),"Celtival" (Treviso), Montecchio Unplugged (Reggio Emilia), ecc…ovunque ricevendo lodi e apprezzamento da parte del pubblico. A marzo del 2008 sono stati invitatai a suonare per il British Council a Firenze.
Più volte sollecitati ad incidere un album, in occasione del Natale 2007, i Crann Ull hanno pubblicato il CD "Christmas Carols". Si tratta di un album di musiche tradizionali natalizie rivisitate e re-interpretate in stile Irish Traditional. “Il risultato è un album di grande atmosfera e dolcezza, allegro ed intimo” (Celtic World).
A maggio 2008 hanno inciso due brani ("Ta Mo Chleamhnas a Dheanmh" e "Earl's Chair reel set") per la colonna sonora del film-documentario "Caristo, città rubata" di Max Chicco, su soggetto e sceneggiatura di Claudio Braggio. Si tratta della storia affascinante di Caristo, splendida città di origini celtiche, "rubata" perché distrutta e dispersa dai Romani.
Nel novembre 2008 i Crann Ull hanno inciso lo spettacolo "Crann Ull- l'albero delle mele" per l'Associazione "Biblioteca Civica di Cologno Monzese", regia e voce recitante di Miranda Scagliotti.
Nel 2009 al gruppo si unisce Daniele Bicego alle uilleann pipes, whistles e flauto traverso irlandese, apportando valore aggiunto alla formazione, e contribuendo a creare un sound caratteristico e ricco di personalità.

Crann Ull are a group born from a union between musicians each with inidvidual experiences in traditional music, brought together by a strong passion for the sound and the melodies typical of areas with celtic origin. The original formation was born from Matteo Bargioni and Elisa Moro who wanted to arrange traditional irish melodies without losing their classical musician sensibily. In doing so they were fascinated with the mix between their sound and Lidia Boccaccio’s peculiar voice “singer of great experience that with her extraordinary voice has contributed to the success of numerous italian formations with an orientation towards traditional sounds of Ireland and other Celtic areas (Folkermesse).
From the beginning a great success : Crann Ull participated in numerous concerts around Italy and have been invited to take part in many of the most important celtic music and folk festivals : including "Folkermesse" (Asti), Capodanno Celtico (Castello Sforzesco di Milano), Usseltik (Saint Vincent - Aosta), "Celtic Days Ome" (Brescia), "Magia Celtica" (Trento), Capodanno Celtico (Riolo Terme- Ravenna),"Celtival" (Treviso), Montecchio Unplugged (Reggio Emilia), ecc…. receiving compliments and appreciation from the listeners. In March 2008 they were invited to play for the British Council in Florence.
Continously encouraged to record an album, in occasion of the upcoming Christmas in 2007 the Crann Ull released the CD entitiled “Christmas Carols”. It is an album containing traditional Christmas music which was revisited and re-intepreted in a traditional irish style “The result is an album with great atmosphere and tenderness, joyful and intimate” (Celtic World).
In May 2008 they recorded two tracks ("Ta Mo Chleamhnas a Dheanmh" e "Earl's Chair reel set") for the soundtrack of the documentary-film “Caristo, the stolen city” by Max Chicco, on theme and scenery by Claudio Braggio. It is about the fascinating story of Caristo, a splendid city of celtic origin, “stolen” because destroyed by Romans. In November 2008, Crann Ull recorded the concert “Crann Ull – the apple tree” for the Cologno Monzese Public Library Association, directed by Miranda Scagliotti.
In 2009 Daniele Bicego joins the group playing the uilleann pipes, whistles and flute, adding value to the formation and contributing to the creation of a rich sound in character and personality.

IL NOME "CRANN ULL"
Il nome Crann Ull in gaelico significa “albero di mele”,che nella mitologia celtica occupa un posto di grande rilievo: l'Aldilà celtico viene disegnato come un'Isola sulla quale crescono i meli, i cui frutti hanno un sapore dolce che ricorda quello del miele. Per i Celti la mela era dunque il frutto dell'immortalità, della scienza e della saggezza, un mezzo per entrare in contatto con l'Altro Mondo, spesso dato agli uomini da esseri provenienti proprio da là.
"Crann Ull" è anche il titolo di una canzone e di un album dei Clannad, una delle formazioni storiche che più ha fatto amare ai Crann Ull la musica irlandese.

THE NAME "CRANN ULL”
In Gaelic it means ‘apple tree’ which in celtic mythology occupies an important place : the celtic afterlife kingdom is pictured as an island where apple trees grow whose fruits are sweet just like honey. For the Celts the apple was the fruit of immortality, science and wisdom, a way to reach the afterlife kingdom often given to humans by beings who inhabit it. “Crann Ull” is also the title of a song and an album by the Clannad – a historical formation that made “Crann Ull” fall in love with Irish music.

Where traditions are not so rare; Sea, country and works scent the air; A multitude of monuments, Planted tubs and patterned pavements.
The longish pedestrian malls; The remnants of defensive walls; Historic buildings are a gauge Of the respect for heritage.
Wheat, rape and pines in the fields; Estuaries guarded by shields; Long sandy beaches and wide scenes; Romantic-ruin go-betweens.
Rivers in parts licked by trees, Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries, And crossed by practical delights - Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.
Fine churches headed at Durham; Football kits ad infinitum; Kept castles - one for study; Masonry behind masonry.

Once drove an old sedan, up north, From a place in Sydney to Cairns; Then to Kuranda I went forth, By train, to look without set plans.
I browsed through the trendy market, With fresh fruits of tropical kind; Walked to the creek through lush thicket - Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.
I dined in a scenic cafe; Then, outside, as I wrote for yen, Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey, You go walkabout with your pen.”
Request or question, I don’t know - Assured voices, elderly men. That’s now several years ago, And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.
