To Purchase " It's NO Accident" please go to www.crashprevention.org
Researched and written by the founder and executive director of the Partnership for Safe Driving, "It's No Accident" documents outrageous policies and practices in both the government and private sector that are now largely responsible for the more than 11 million crashes, 3 million injuries, and 40,000 deaths on our nation's roads each year.
The book reveals that, far from simply choosing to ignore dangerous driving, the government has decided to look the other way while companies large and small promote and encourage dangerous driving behavior; all for profit. The results have been disastrous.
"It's No Accident" includes the heart-wrenching real-life stories of victims of all different forms of dangerous driving. The book also takes a candid look at the fragmented, ineffective approach to grassroots activism that has so far defined the crash prevention movement, and offers an alternative model.
Carefully researched and documented, with more than 270 footnotes, this book is a must-read for anyone concerned about violent death and injury on our roads and how to stop it.
On Dec 27,2008 at around 5:30 am Margie Davis was sitting on a pallet of water in front of a 7-Eleven store when she was struck and killed by a hit and run driver. A small newer model, four door silver car jumped the parking bumper, hit her, crashed into the store and took off. She died on scene from severe injuries. “We have met the enemy, and he is us!”
is a phrase coined by Walt Kelly, the creator of the old “Pogo” comic strip. It has been applied to many causes since its initial use on a poster for the first Earth Day back in 1970.
When it comes to tackling issues like speeding, stop-sign and red-light running, not buckling up, and distracted driving (cell phones, texting, eating, grooming – anything but driving) we indeed have met the enemy, and it is indeed ourselves.
A grim reminder of just how responsible we can be for bringing grief into our world is this Dallas Morning News Story that came my way.
In reflecting on this tragedy in Plano I am reminded that I often hear the comment, “If the police would just do their job we wouldn’t have these speeding problems.”
My response has consistently been, “Have you ever met an officer who instructed you to speed?”
The reason I ask is that usually the best person to solve a problem is the person who created the problem in the first place. Since police do not cause speeding, then we must look to the source in order to address the behavior.
I then caution residents that if they complain long enough and loud enough that law enforcement may step up enforcement in their neighborhood. At that time they may well need to be ready to accept a ticket themselves. Why? Because in feedback I’ve received from the 400+ law enforcement agencies Keep Kids Alive Drive 25 has worked with, 75% or more of tickets written in neighborhoods are to residents. Many times chronic complainers are on the receiving end. “We have met the enemy, and he is us!”
As we each commit to creating safer roadways for the benefit of everyone, let each of us first look in the mirror and ask, “Am I part of the solution, or am I part of the problem?” The answer, and our response to it behind the wheel, can make all the difference. With the driver in Plano, Texas this past Sunday, it could have made all the difference in his life and allowed 5 wonderful human beings to continue to live, grow, and give.
Why not concertize your own commitment to safe driving? Take the Pledge. Visit the KKAD25® "You Choose" page to make your pledge to keep neighborhood streets (and all other roadways) safer throughout the summer. Our goal is 10,000 pledges. Help make this a reality by passing along this link. Let’s put our pledges into practice on the road each and every day.

Local, state, and federal transportation agencies no longer are trying to prevent crashes. They are trying to make them safer. This mission is failing. The incidence of death and serious injury is going up, not down.
The Partnership would like to redirect our nation's attention and resources to preventing crashes from happening in the first place.
I started this Myspace in honor of all the people in the U.S. who have been killed in motor vehicle crashes. This page is intended to serve as a living online memorial for members and supporters of Crashprevention.org whose loved ones have been seriously injured or killed on our roads.
I joined Crashprevention.org in 2004 after my 14-year-old son Tyler was killed while riding his bike on a bright sunny day. He was coming home from his friend’s house, and was hit by a motorist with a history of speeding violations. The motorist was required to pay only a small fine for my son’s death. He received no jail time, nor any other penalty. Afterward, he continued to speed and receive speeding tickets, but the government has allowed him to go right on driving, with no additional penalties.
After my son’s violent death, I set out to find some relief from my anger and pain. I knew I needed to make a difference somehow. I contacted Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and spoke to a few people there. But when I told them that the driver who killed my son was not tested for alcohol and was not suspected of being drunk, the people at MADD quickly lost interest in my case. I received no support from them of any kind. Apparently in their eyes, the driver was not a criminal. He was “just speeding.”
So I felt abandoned again! I felt like there was nobody to turn to. I kept searching the Internet, thinking to myself, “There has to be some organization out there that I can join and help.” I couldn’t bear to think that Tyler’s death would be in vain.
After months of searching, finally I found Crashprevention.org (also known as The Partnership for Safe Driving). I wrote the founder of the organization, and then spoke with her by phone. I remember saying, “I AM SO GLAD I FOUND YOU!” Until now, nobody wanted to hear my story. NOBODY wanted to hear that the driver was “just speeding.”
Crashprevention.org cares not just about drunk driving and failure to buckle up but about ALL forms of dangerous driving, including speeding, aggressive driving, distracted driving, drowsy driving, drug-impaired driving, age-impaired driving, and dangerous practices in the trucking industry. Crashprevention.org wants the government and private sector to dedicate as much energy and resources to these problems and they dedicate to drunk driving and seatbelt campaigns.
So I have found a home with Crashprevention.org. With the organization’s blessing and support, I have created this Myspace as a living online memorial for supporters of Crashprevention.org whose loved ones have been seriously injured and killed in crashes.
If you have a picture of a loved one that you would like to have included on this page, please send me a copy, along with a paragraph about the person (e.g. their name, age, date of the crash, cause of the crash if known, location of the crash, and extent of their injuries).
More than 42,000 people die on U.S. roads each year, more than 3 million are injured! This ongoing national tragedy is swept quietly under the rug and is rarely even spoken of in public by our elected officials.
Together, we can give a name and face to each and every one of these victims, and force our government to acknowledge and address this silent, violent epidemic.
So let us honor our loved ones and stand up and make that change ONE PERSON at a time!

More than 11 million crashes take place on U.S. roads every year, resulting in more than 2.6 million police reported: injuries and more then 40 THOUSAND deaths. Unfortunately, most serious crashes are not accidents. They are the direct result of dangerous driving. The Partnership for Safe Driving is a non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating all forms of dangerous driving.

A child born today can expect to live an average of 78 years. That’s the good
news. The bad news is that one out of every 100 children born today will die
violently in a motor vehicle crash. Additionally, 77 of every 100 will be injured
in a highway crash at some point during their lives, many more than once.
Beginning a life with such high potential for death and injury simply from
engaging in transportation on the highway system we all own, should not be
acceptable to our Governmental officials or to the public.
A well planned and coordinated approach to improving the State’s roadways
involving all areas and disciplines of highway safety is not only good practice
but paramount to change the highway fatality and injury trends.
