Craters of the Moon is the culmination of (a continuous, ghetto-boom-box-documentation-of ) three years collaboration between songwriters Anthony Richitella (Guitar) and KT Shanafelt (Guitar, Vocals). While both had put in time in past projects such as Geyser (EP and Self titled album) and Evil Can Evil (a spatter of shows), their unique approach to writing kept them working together as a core duo. Working as The Breyer Horse Race, they played as a four piece with drummer Judy Wheeler (Lovey, Booth sitter) and bass player Josh Galloway (Secretariat). Glenn Newkirk (drums) and Dan Krejci (bass) had spent seven years in the Dirt Fishermen with KT and after a 2006 reunion, it seemed like a natural fit to continue working together as the COTM. After playing a year of shows and recording 15 songs with Andy Agenbroad, Newkirk decided to pursue graduate school which led to a new sound and line up for COTM. Travis Ward and Allison Ward offered to step in as the new rhythm section. With Travis on stand up bass and Ali on a cocktail drum kit, the sound became intimate, organic and pared down to the core of the songs. The Wards completed the new package with vocal harmonies that transformed the existing line up of songs and paved the way for future evolution of the COTM sound.
