Mr. Roast Beef Sandwich goes to the 2009 Pa. Farm Show

InfluencesSteve Cash (The Ozark Mountain Daredevils), Paul Butterfield, Mark Wenner, Jerry Portnoy, Pete McMahon (formerly of the Kingsnakes from upstate New York, he is a terrific vocalist and harp player), Joe Manuel (unrecorded Rochester, N.Y. harp man), R.J. Mischo, Adam Gussow (Satan and Adam), James Harman, Gary Smith, Junior Wells, James Cotton, Nate Myers and a whole lot of others too numerous to mention.
Sounds LikeGood question. I've been listening to everyone -- Sonny Boy II, Mark Wenner, Paul Butterfield, James Cotton, James Harman, "Wild Man" Mike Turk, Gary Smith, Paul deLay, Norton Buffalo, Carey Bell and R.J. Mischo, to name a few. I'm currently listening to Stanley "The Baron" Behrens (Canned Heat, LA Blues Alliance, Willie Dixon, etc., etc.). He is amazing. I try to copy their riffs and imitate their tone hoping some of it will end up rubbing off. Who do I actually sound like? Me. If you said I sounded like any of the above, I will gratefully buy you a beer.

I am a Greenville, Pa. native who has been playing the harmonica for about 30 years. In the early 1980s, while living in Rochester, N.Y., I met harp player Joe Manuel, who became my teacher and mentor. As a young harmonica-playing whipper-snapper, I occasionally sat in with the legendary Colorblind James Experience, founded by the late great Chuck "Colorblind James" Cuminale. The Experience, a musical force in the midst of a very creative time in the Rochester music scene, was more than gracious in putting up with my musical shortcomings (looking back, I realize I sucked pretty bad). As I became more experienced, I went on to play in a number of Rochester bands, including new wave blues rockers Nerve Circus, the Last Minute Blues Band, and the Bone Shakers acoustic duo. It was with the Last Minute Blues Band that I was first dubbed "Diamond Dave." I've had other nicknames, but that one seems to crop up the most, even though I'm not much for jewelry.

In 2000, I returned to my hometown where I met blues guitarist extraordinaire Fritz Hassel and his band the Crossfire Blues Band. I sat in with the band and was immediately asked to join as a full-time member. Crossfire played throughout the western Pa.-eastern Ohio region for several years.

In 2004, I moved to the Williamsport area with my girlfriend and soul mate Amy Skelton to take a job as a reporter with the Williamsport Sun-Gazette newspaper. Soon after, tired of playing to the coyotes and skunks living in the woods near my house, I put an ad in the paper looking for other blues musicians to jam with. Local blues legend Jay "Bone" Short, founder and guitarist of the Dirty Bird Blues Band, answered the ad.

I played with Dirty Bird throughout the Williamsport area for about four years. The band recently disbanded. (See R.I.P. Dirty Bird blog)

I'm dedicated to playing the blues and am seeking other like-minded musicians for informal jams or professional gigs.

If you are interested in playing the blues. leave a message on this page or contact me at dt57newsdude@aol.com. p>
