My Folk Club

Hammer for Life

We have our moments

Friends I have met

Red Shoes

Lovely couple who came to stay for a few days played at my folk club. Their new album should be a gem when it comes out.

Dambuskers

One evening in Devon there was the Dambuskers jamming with friends and visitors. The best evening in a pub, ever. A few pints of Old Appledore Ale helped.

Fiddlebix

Another lovely evening spent in a pub in Devon. Even some of my non-folkie friends liked this talented duo.

Edward Mikalski (Teddy)

Singer (sort of) / songwriter (excellent). Based in Denmark but with English roots. We try to get together whenever he is over here.

Penni McLaren Walker

Singer/songwriter. Brought teddy to my folk club one night and entertained us with her songs.

Carolyn Sheppard

Met up with Teddy at an open mike session. Lovely singer and writes some good songs as well.

Life and Times

An excellent evening full of tunes, songs and stories about their native Bedfordshire. They also do a lot of work in local schools.

Gareth Balch

Member of my folk club and an excellent interpreter of Bob Dylan songs.

Mark Lunn

An excellent evening at the club with mark singing his own songs with his own sense of humour.

Steve White

Young man with attitude who brings folk singing into the modern era. He shows it is a living tradition.

Sinéad Orme

More acoustic than folk but had my folk club in raptures with her live singing.

Shaza

The most wonderful woman you could ever hope to meet. We all love her.

Terry Ferdinand

Presenter, disc jockey and general dog’s body at bishopfm. If you want to promote an album or just your music, get in touch with Terry.

Sheedyfrost

Two excellent singer/songwriters, check out the song ‘Refugee’ on their page. Paul shares my love of cricket as well.

Whoops n Daisy

A new duo from Denmark. Featuring Edward Mikalski and Marie Lindhardt who really gets her teeth into her music (saw teeth, that is).

Croxdale Folk Club

Welcoming folk club in the heart of County Durham. Featured act was The Young’uns (see below).

The Young’uns

Three fine young singers carrying on the tradition A'cappella singing with occasional accompaniment.

Ian McKone

Ian McKone is a traditional singer, guitarist and fiddler playing mainly English and Scottish folk song with the odd instrumental thrown in for good measure.

Kirkby Fleetham Folk Club

Lovely folk club held in the village hall (since the pub closed). Run by Paul and Wendy Arrowsmith. Also there were Rebekah Findlay and Joolz Cavell who all play together as Blind Summat!. Wendy and Rebekah have formed a duo called One Stone. Check them all out (just click on the name) and feast your ears.

Sarah McQuaid

Beautiful singer and excellent guitarist. Spell binding live act. Met at Kirkby Fleetham Folk Club.

Zoox

Three talented musicians and singers. Traditional tunes with a contemporary attitude they say and a brilliant live act they are. Met at Kirkby Fleetham Folk Club.

Chris Milner

Sensitive singer/songwriter with an engrossing style. Met at Kirkby Fleetham Folk Club.

The Jones Boys

Excellent musicians, especially Sam on the harmonium, specialising in traditional tunes and songs.

Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer

Made a special visit to a local folk club and was treated to a thoroughly entertaining evening.

Friends I would like to meet

Actually I would like to meet all of them. This is just a personal list of some special friends.
Mary Kathleen Burke My 2007 artist of the year. A radio show host and lovely singer.
Kaytee and Robert My 2007 writers of the year. Founders of Acoustic Scarborough.
Davy Lees And not just because of the damage we’d do to a bottle of fine malt whisky.
Eamon O Maonaigh A singer/songwriter of lovely ballads. Has produced a CD for Alzheimer's Ireland.
Kim Guy a lovely and versatile singer. Like her tea the same way as me.
George Papavgeris Always ready to help out where he can. Not a bad singer/songwriter as well.
Chris Millington Keeps the folk alive with his songs inspired by the north Devon coast.
Christina Stewart Not only a fine singer but promotes the Scottish Gaelic tradition through projects like Kist o Dreams and Bairn's Kist.
No Fixed Abode A modern folk/acoustic duo I particularly like.
Trochrague Especially Anne Gomez whose solo album is wonderful.
Dolbro Dan A young talent with a terrific style.
James ’Bar’ Bowen A radical singer/songwriter in the best and oldest traditions of folk music.
Brother Crow A duo that write and perform old style ballads usually about there native north east.
Henry Clements This is folk singing as you will hear it in your local folk club. No frills and wonderful.

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this folk-carol on myspace...
Poem 230 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(see my blog for details):
CHRISTMAS SUNG SIMPLY

As gospellers have said,
Beneath signalling skies,
On land dusty to tread,
A trough in a stable
Was the strawy first-bed
Of a divine baby -
The forgiving Godhead.

A season for new hope -
There then and here now;
The yuletide of goodwill -
There then and here now.

In respect of this chance,
Beneath bright or dark skies,
Faith's the star that we glance
Attending Christ's churches
And trying to enhance,
With singing and ritual,
Our God-loving stance.

A...

Hello, Ken & Seasons Greetings, my friend!

Wishing you a very MERRY CHRISTMAS full of Good Cheer & Blessings! Getting things ready here to start putting up the tree, play Christmas music & make a nice dinner! It's a lovely sunny day, too!
btw... our talented friend, FULL TIME INDIE Musician, Neal Fox, has some BRAND NEW as yet unreleased songs out that are stupendous! And as usual, they're drenched in pop friendly hooks, outstanding lyrics & accomplished CHOPS! I just LOVE the gorgeous piano solo on "Ask Your Doctor", as well as the dizzying array of imaginative words, & fun yet scathing social commentary on our over-drugged, Big Pharma heavy culture.
Outlandishly funny, too & soon an amazing video of it will be out! Stop by this link to hear it..along with the very moving, "Love Is The Hardest Part" & more! If U fancy buying these, I know Neal would appreciate your support! I'm sure that the monetary differences between currencies are easily transferred. Just click here to listen, & enjoy! Also at cdbaby.com.. if U type in "Neal Fox" you can find his NEW, fabulous release on sale til New Years: "Songs for the New Revolution". Only $4.50 for NINE killer songs! Including, "We're All Gonna Be There", which I know you LOVE! Listening samples R here. This is digital only, but also the CD, "NOW IT"S PERSONAL" is a repeated-listening GEM w/ topical AND purely fun/ZANY songwriting in an impressive variety of styles/moods .
(also has: We're All Gonna Be There). No record exec fronts Mr Fox the funds to create these wonderful songs... so I'm hoping his fans will take the time to remember him while Christmas shopping this year! Thanx, Ken!

Peace&Love, Liz

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem sung on myspace...

Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(please see my blog):
TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001

Where traditions are not so rare;
Sea, country and works scent the air;
A multitude of monuments,
Planted tubs and patterned pavements.

The longish pedestrian malls;
The remnants of defensive walls;
Historic buildings are a gauge
Of the respect for heritage.

Wheat, rape and pines in the fields;
Estuaries guarded by shields;
Long sandy beaches and wide scenes;
Romantic-ruin go-betweens.

Rivers in parts licked by trees,
Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries,
And crossed by practical delights -
Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.

Fine churches headed at Durham;
Football kits ad infinitum;
Kept castles - one for study;
Masonry behind masonry.

And, with moulding-works out that way,
It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

A bit of advance notice - MondayMonday proudly presents Rún and Steven Finn and more at The Wilmington Arms, Clerkenwell on Monday 7th December

Rún collect and arrange old folk songs written in the ancient language of Erin. So far, thanks to Nora from Donegal, they have a nice wee collection of well-known ditties and are now adding to their repertoire with some unusual old forgotten songs from the province of Ulster. Rún are five fantastic lassies who perform four-part vocal arrangements of old Gaelic songs like ’An Cailín Rua’ (the red-haired girl), ’Casadh an tSúgain’ (twisting the hayrope) and ’Bo Na Leath Adhairce’ (the one-horned cow). Rún is the Gaelic word for ’secret, wish or love’ (cf. rune). See http://www.myspace.com/runceol ..

Steven Finn’s ears were filled with the music of Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Johnny Cash and old time country music. Aged 15 he began teaching himself the guitar, learning songs like Leadbelly’s ‘Bourgeois Blues’ and Charlie Daniels’ ‘The devil went down to Georgia’. On hearing Bob Dylan songs Finn started to write his own words and in doing so found a lifelong passion for Jazz and Folk Blues, a getaway car he could drive.
