Influences
Our dad. He likes to play cowboy songs and the Beatles. There is no getting around the Beatles when talking about influences or Prince as a matter of fact. Philipp and I used to drive all around Chicago and sing along to Prince. Then there is Madonna, Gertrude Stein, our Mother, our sister Anja, her daughter Dora who is also quiet the chanteuse, Edith Piaf, Billy Holiday, Marilyn Monroe, Lotte Lenya, Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Annie Lennox. All the grand divas. Our music teachers Mr. Bell, Bart Wolgamot and Sunnie Hikawa who first got us into choral music. Stevie Wonder, we love Stevie Wonder! Silvio Rodríguez, Johnny Cash, Tom Waits, Eric Burdon, Sly and the Family Stone, Funkadelic, Parliament. We love funky stuff actually. Then there are our friends that influence us endlessly: Tommy Simatupang, Ben Montgomery, Markus Conrad, Lisa Birman, James Johnston, Michael Smoler, Chelsea Dolinar-Hikawa, Nick Ribaudo . . . this list is infinite, but we don't want to spill all of our insides. We will keep some secrets. Basically we are very influenceable.
Sounds Like
A brother and a sister singing to each other having too much fun and driving their parents crazy. No, crazy for Jane. Our parents love us.
Crazy for Jane is about Jane, about being crazy for Jane, about siblings and the protagonist of their imagination whom they have sworn to travel the world to serenade. Josepha and her brother Philipp grew up in Frankfurt and Chicago, and are currently based in Berlin where the gloomy city of Brecht and historical upheaval inspires their songs. Their music is a desperate serenade underneath your window. It is pop and folk and sometimes a little jazz. Their songs are fun and poetic and their harmonies unusual and at times dissonant. Their debut album "Desperate Serenade" was released in June 2006. And their second album "Watermelon Cloud", which they recorded in Chicago with dear friends came out in July of 2007. Currently they are working on a third album called "Crazy Jane meets the family"
Please support them by checking out Desperate Serenade at Olive Juice Music, Bicycle Records, CDbaby or for download in iTunes! Of course, you can also come get your Jane at shows.
The two have also collaborated with other Berlin artists. You can hear them on Tommy Simatupang's new album blame it on your monkey. And the lovely Sibsi just released a CD where Philipp and Josepha got to be Silhouettes. Check out Sibsi & the Silhouettes "Party is War" (availabe through Olive Juice Music)
