About me:
The Rocking Comedy Show was created August 1st 2004. However the host has been around doing the “Crazy” Jay Show since 1994. Jason Bird got interested in radio inn 1986 when he discovered the radio program The Dr. Demento Show. Here Jason would sit and listen to the craziest songs he had ever heard. Songs from “Weird Al” Yankovic, songs about fish heads, dead puppies, dead skunks, boobies and more. Every week Jay would stop whatever it was he was doing at 8:00pm and head home to get demented.
It wasn’t long after that, that Jay started calling into the show and requesting songs. There was one song that Jay heard he needed to hear again the next week, so he requested it, and the good doctor didn’t play it. For weeks on end Jay called in and asked for this song, and for weeks on end the good doctor never played it. Then one week Doctor Demento said on his show “This one is going out to a crazy guy I’ll call Crazy Jay who would have to be crazy for requesting this song as many times as he did. So the name “Crazy” Jay was born! The name of the song was “She Grabbed My Coconuts” by Barry and The Bookbinders
It was around 1994 when Jay decided he wanted to go to school for radio and he wrote Doctor Demento a letter asking what courses he should take and more. Doctor Demento responded and that fall Jay enrolled at Fullerton to become a radio disk jockey. The Fullerton campus had two stations one that was top 40 and used for t he teaching of the course an it ran like a real station you had to play off a playlist, do news, features and interviews.
There was a second station on campus 93.5 KFCR that was run by the students, each semester you would get a new position like program director, or music director, and when on air you could play whatever you wanted. This is where the “Crazy” Jay Show was born. Jay started doing a show like Doctor Demento was doing. However Jay did not want to be a Demento rip-off or wannabee so he started inviting some of the local talent that lived in Los Angeles that was being played on the show to come in for interviews and sing on the show. Jay had acts on every week. He even did an interview with the group responsible for his name “Crazy” Jay.
Since then “Crazy” Jay has interviewed some greats on his show:
Weird Al Yankovic
Doctor Demento
George Lopez
Tommy Chong
Rusty Warren
Shelley Berman
Stan Freberg
Tom Lehrer
George Carlin
And so many more. Jay has a huge love of comedy even spent some time working at the Brea, Ca. Improv comedy club as a promoter and sound guy. Jay ever hosted a few comedy nights on the stage with some well known comics.
November 27th 1997 Jay put together his first live event that would showcase some of the talented artist on his show. As the show started to come together Jay asked the good doctor if he would come to the show as a special guest. Then Doctor Demento said “Why don’t I just help you host the show?” So the two of them would share the stage, and the line to get in the show at this local bar in Anaheim went around the building. The good Doctor must of really saw something in Jay because he invited Jay to come to his show several times to hang out, and even answer the phones with his other crew like Whimsical Will, Goodtime Gil, and more.
It was in 1998 that show found a home on the Internet and soon it would take off and change in several different forms over the years. Jay would do the show one way for awhile…years and then he would get tired of it and change it again just to keep it fresh. That is what use to make the show so crazy because of it never stayed the same.
Over the years Crazy Jay did more live shows around town in bars, clubs, and restaurants just to promote his show and the great acts that were on it. The live shows started to catch on that club owners, bar owners and more started calling Jay and asking if he could do a show. Jay started getting big names to make appearances like Tommy Chong, Rusty Warran, Debra Wilson from Mad TV and more.
December of 2000 Jay moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where the show would go even more changes. Crazy Jay thought Vegas would be the perfect place for his show, and home to all kinds of great talent. However when then talent never came around he had to make a change with his show that would fit with Vegas. He met up with two local comedians Mike Potter, and Shuli…Jay added them to the show and they hosted live shows every Wednesday at a place called Honest John’s. Jay’s regular listeners did not like the new changes and did not accept the show’s new co-host. Many felt they just did not fit.
Once again Jay was going to have to make a change to make the show work. Often times Jay would get tired of doing the show and maybe go weeks without doing it. It started going back to being like the Dr. Demento Show again, and that was something Jay did not want. It was June of 2004 when Jay announced on his show he was not giving the show up, but coming back with something bigger and like no other.
August 1st 2004: Welcome to Crazy Jay’s Rocking Comedy Show
So Crazy Jay came back with a whole new idea for the show. He added odd news, he was adding main stream music and local music, rock music, and the comedy. He added sound bites and made the show a fast paced quick witted show. He would have special guest comedians come in an co-host the show, as well as a new segment where listeners and fans of the show could be a guest dj and come play three songs an hour of anything they wanted to play. The show started to spark some interest on the net again, and for the first time was voted one of the most listened to on-line radio shows by a wide margin of people. Jay was having fun doing the show again.
In March of 2009 The Rocking Comedy Show with “Crazy” Jay added Mad Mike. Mad Mike came on as a guest DJ and quickly became a fan favorite. He got invited back the next week to do it again, and again people wanted more Mike. Then Jay asked Mike if he would like to be his co-host and Mad Mike was born. The show is now better then ever. It’s the best version Jay have given. They are a hit on itunes, as well as other places. The show is funny, the guests are great. If your looking for a fast paced, quick witted comedy show then this is your show!!
Who I'd like to meet:
I am a pretty social guy, and I enjoy meeting all kinds of people, especially those who enjoy the radio show. However there are some great people that I would love to Interview on the show....past and present. George Lopez, Jerry Seinfeld, Lucille Ball, John Candy, Benny Hill, Chris Farley, like I said the list is endless. Some of the guests that do come on the show are. "Weird Al" Yankovic, Bobby Slayton, Mike Pace, Matt Kirshen, Tommy Chong, Rich Natole, Larry G. Jones, Sharon Paquette, Dino-Mike, Phoebe Carter, and more.
