To trace the origins of CrazyP we have to go all the way back to 1996. This was the year that brought together James Baron and Chris Todd. It was the era of Atari’s, Akais and bedroom studios and, through their love of bending and reshaping old records from many different genres, a production partnership was born in the backstreets of Nottingham. After a couple of releases under various different monikers, the work attracted the ears of legendary deep house label paperecordings based in Manchester and the creature that is CrazyPenis was born. We won’t bore you all with and year by year history of what happened next and how we ended up with a name like CrazyPenis as rumour and speculation are far more interesting than the truth.
In short, the demand for live performance from CrazyPenis continued to grow and required the addition of extra musicians to produce the show, and in no particular order the following people were fished from their normal(ish) lives to climb aboard the bus. Danielle Moore was located crooning her way round a house party in Manchester and given a microphone instead of a glass of wine. Tim Davies, having worked with Jim and Chris previously on CP tracks, broke from the shackles of the photo lab to play bass guitar, and finally Matt Klose also having worked with the boys before, was given the task of out-drumming the drum machine. We are still a little unsure what happened to the Dr Rhythm box but Matt assures us in his best cockney that he’s “taken care of it”
Now settled into the five piece format with Jim and Chris at the production controls, the band have been touring extensively over the past few years including many trips round England, Ireland, Scotland and a couple to Wales. There’s been numerous and enjoyable trips to Australia since the band were adopted by the Aussies in 2003 and shows across Europe over the past five years. Highlights so far have included a support tour with ‘Faithless’ in 2005, New Zealand and Australia for New Year 2006, headlining the Castle Stage at the Big Chill 07 and the summer festival season every year!
This year, the band is looking forward to putting the final touches to what will be their 4th artist album.
Keep your ears and eyes open.
PS, check out Hot Toddy, Ron Basejam, The Bionics and Secret Stealth on myspace, side projects involving various members(!) of the penis crew.
