About me:

Karina Braun has been in the massage therapy and bodywork field for 11 years. She has worked in all aspects of this career. She attended the University of North Texas for her undergraduate studies and then went to Hands on School of Massage in Garland, TX in 1997. She began her career by owning a small hair salon and spa in Texas. Later, Karina decided to study Reiki and began teaching others how to utilize Reiki in order to balance the energetic body of their client. She also received Yoga Instructor Certification in 2001 from Yogamotion. In 2002, Karina relocated to Las Vegas and taught at Dahan Institute of Massage Studies, then went on to work at a world renowned spa on the strip. Karina has firsthand knowledge in many facets of this career, in addition to, experiencing a repetitive strain injury from doing barefoot deep compression massage. Feeling all the emotions that go along with being injured definitely gave her more empathy to help others in this field. Also, Karina has been through many aspects of the medical system and can assist other therapists in the healing of their injuries. The book Creating Peace with Your Hands is compiled from many hours of hands on practical knowledge and a great deal of research on injury and prevention. In this book, Karina has given techniques to facilitate the health of body, mind, and spirit. She incorporates an approach to healing that is not only accurate but one that everyone can embrace. The book Creating Peace with Your Hands is brilliant, thought provoking, and inspiring to everyone that reads it.

Shoulder stretch with strap. Watch this video to warm up your shoulders before you perform massage. Move through your ROM slowly until you reach your endpoint behind your back and then return the strap to the front. Always work to a point of stretch before discomfort occurs.

Check out Creating Peace with Your Hands featured in New Products in Massage and Bodywork Magazine. The Sept/Oct issue is superb. It has many great articles. I especially enjoyed the one on energy work and massage. It is great to see this subject in the mainstream.

Leslie Young is doing a great job as Editor in Chief and if anyone needs to advertise then contact Jodi Hardee. Thank you Massage and Bodywork Magazine!

To think of massage as something you only do with your hands is incorrect. A therapist who uses the hands for a palpation tool and the whole body for most of the pressure is working correctly. Massage is very physical and the muscles of the arms should not be used for long periods of time without taking a break. The arm muscles are not generally aerobic and fatigue easily; however, the large muscles of the legs and hips can function efficiently for many hours at a time. Generate your power from the lower body to help prevent injury and excessive strain to your arms and hands.

You have already inspired several massage therapists to engage in self care, as several of my co-workers have given me excellent feedback from your book!  I'm so proud of you for your achievement and look forward to taking your home study course!

When performing deep barefoot compression massage, keep your arms at a 90 degree angle. This type of massage demands a lot of upper arm strength. Be sure to stretch the rotator cuff and pecs to retain flexibility.
