John's Interests
|
| General | Here's where I get in trouble because i have lots of interests but some of them are pure fanboy things. Oh well. Okay here we go. I have been interested in comics for a long time and have collected off and on for a number of years. Though I have gone through some lean periods I don't think there has ever been a time that i haven't bought at least a couple books just to see what is going on. To go along with comics I also collect Sci-fi and horror memorabilia and go to every new movie that I can. I have enjoyed Classic Horror and Science Fiction for more years than I care to remember. Great Stuff!!!
Early in my childhood (back before the Stone Age, don't tell anybody) I developed an interest in DINOSAURS (because I used to play with the babies, remember...back before the stone age) which eventually manifested itself into a full blown career as a herpetologist (What the hell is that???). Herpetologists study reptiles and amphibians both in nature and under contolled conditions. I have kept many species over the years and have managed to breed several of them during that time. I regularly go out and film them in the wild and am compiling footage for some various projects I am working on.. I enjoy getting out there with nature.
When I'm not filming or working I like to sit down and write. I wish I was more diligent than I am but I try to get as much done as possible. I have written several short storie, a few poems, lots of articles, Several screenplays (a couple of which have been filmed), and a novel. I enjoy writing and even have an ongoing diary covering the "madness" that I call my life that spans several notebooks and thirteen years. (hmmm! Is that a lucky number or not? I'm not so sure.)
For recreation I like to go out on occasion and check out various tracks in the area to take in a little quiet, relaxing STOCK CAR RACING!!!!!!!!!!! I just love the roar of the engines and the high level of competition that short track racing offers.
And yes, who really cares at this point, I like to study strange phenomona, ghostly activity, and Cryptozoology sprinkled with a pinch of early religions. | | Music | Heavy Metal all the way Baby!!!!! I like to listen to many forms of current Metal like Classic Metal, Power Metal, and their nefarious step child...BLACK METAL!!!
I also like some Classic Rock lightly coated with a few (SSSHHH!!! don't tell anyone)...Oldies.
I listen to; Sabbath (of course), Dio, Ozzy, Priest, Maiden, Hammerfall, Rhapsody In Flames, The mighty "Yeti", Dragonforce, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, and Dark Funeral. There are others but I think you get the point. Unlike my varied interests in other areas my musical interests are quite narrow. Oh well, nobody's perfect!!!
I have been in five bands over the years and three of them (Black Velvet, Blade, and Labyrinth) were Metal bands. I keep threatening to get something together again but,,,we'll see. (As if I have time to add a new band to everything I'm currently doing.) | | Movies | Here we go...a day at the movies. I really like to watch movies (I should, I like to make them as well)and here are some of my favorites from both the past and present. They are in no particular order; The Day The Earth Stood Still, Forbidden Planet, Fantastic Four: The Rise of The Silver Surfer, Halloween, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, Transformers, Curse of The Jade Scorpion, House On The Haunted Hill (the original Vincent Price version), Planet Of The Apes (1968), Open Range (yes you read right...a Western), What About Bob, Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman, Lord Of The Rings (all three), Subspecies...Etc., Etc., I could go on. Maybe I'll add some more at a later date. | | Television | Whew!!! Where do we go from here (now that all of the children are grown up...OOPS!! sorry about that. Television...New or old? How 'bout a little of both. We begin with Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Heroes, The Lost World, Star Trek (the original), Kolchak; The Night Stalker, Stargate SG-1, Metalocalypse, Scooby Doo, Venture Brothers. There are others. Again, I'll list some more later. | | Books | Where do I begin on this one. I have several favorite authors so i'll start with that. My all-time favorite is H.P. Lovecraft. His stories are real creepy and his "otherworldly" creations are downright alien. Next I'd have to say I like Stepenen King. Particular favorites are; "The Stand,"Pet Semetary," "The Shining,"Salem's Lot," and "Needful Things." I also like works by Burroughs, Bradbury, Kevin J. Anderson, and I really like the special Crimes Unit series by Kay Hooper. Most recently read books are "Blood Dreams," By Kay Hooper and "The Last Days Of Krypton," by Kevin J. Anderson. I think my favorite story is "Earthblood," by Keith Laumer and Rosel George Brown. Another favorite of mine is "Assemblers of Infinity," by Kevin J. Anderson and Doug Beason. I'll list others down the road. | | Heroes | My parents of course, Raymond Ditmars, Forrest J. Ackerman, Clifford H. Pope, Dick Bartlett, Roger conant, Walter Auffenberg, Julius Schwartz, Ray Harryhausen, Black Sabbath, and (of cours) our police, firefighters, and the military. They put their lives on the line so we can enjoy ours. |

About me:
Where to begin? I really have no clue. I'm into so many things that it's difficult to pick a starting point. I guess I'll start with today and work my way backwards. I am the co-owner of a recently opened specialized combination pet store/comic store called "Comics And Critters." (Say that sentence in one breath. It sounds like some crazed madman making a statement about world domination.) The store just opened three weeks ago and has been doing well so far. The co-owner of the store is Erica Heflin and you can find her traversing these pages as well. We try to make the store interesting and keep up with new releases. We have a gaming area where people can play CCG's, Miniature's games, Warhammer, or RPG's like D&D and Call Of Cthulhu. It's the fun place to shop.
We also carry a variety of unusual reptiles, amphibians, and fish.
When I'm not playing around in the store I am often filming reptiles both in the natural habitat as well as animals under contolled conditions. The reason for this is that I also co-own (along with my daughter and best friend) a production company called "Creature Productions." To date we have completed five short movies and four full length features including a movie we shot for a friend of ours. We have other projects in the works including a sci-fi project titled, "Captain Cosmos and The Planet Of Reptiles."
With the addition of the store we plan on working on a number of 'Critter" projects as time permits.
It's never a dull moment around here.
P.S. Oh...by the way, even with as busy as I am I still find time to go out and have a good time.

Who I'd like to meet:
Girls and Aliens (not the illegal kind) No, just kidding, I'm not that shallow. I like to meet people of similar interests to just shoot the breeze with. Sometimes you can learn quite a bit about something you already know about just by listening to someone that is looking at it from a different perspective.
I also like to meet people that create the things that I like; Comic creators, writers, artists, and editors. It's interesting to learn about some of the motivations that led to the creation of the things that many of us like to pour a bit of ourselves into. I have met a number of creators already, including a few that are no longer with us. I usually have them autograph things as well.
Another group of people that can prove very interesting is meeting and talking to actors, actresses, and creators of movies that I've enjoyed over the years. I've had the opportunity to strike up conversations with several actors. Being a filmmaker myself I also like to meet local area actors to see what kinds of projects they are working on and to see if there is anything we have planned that they would like to take a stab at. I've made many friends over the last four years among the local acting talent and I look forward to meeting many more.
Last (but certainly not least) I like to attend reptile expos and conferences to make new friends and to keep in touch with people I've known for years. The socials after the events are always a good time.
And yes, I do like to meet interesting girls.
