GeneralWriting, plain and simple. I like to write as a profession, and as a pass time leisure activity. I am happiest when I am writing. If you want to be a writer of any caliber you also have to do a lot of reading.

When I am not writing I like to spend time with my family. My wife and children are very important to me. We do a lot of family activities and our kitchen is the hub of our universe. Cooking is an excellent activity to do with kids and ours have made everything from dill pickles to chicken enchiladas.

No discussion of my family would be complete without mention of our bloodhound, Duke. He is the typical six month old bloodhound. Curious, rambunctious, has a nose that could smell the coffee…In Brazil. He is also a trifle selective in his hearing.

MoviesOkay shoot me already, I pine for the good old days when a director had to be a good storyteller and couldn't rely on CGI to make movie moments. that said:

I like an action movie and it can't just be mindless violence. I loved Indiana Jones, and I have to admit it is a real treat to fish into the bargain bin at the store and fish out something I have never heard of and come home with it and be impressed with its storytelling.

I like movies that make me think. About what depends on the movie. I liked Crash, but I find a lot of the socially controversial movies to be trite

BooksBelow are a list of my published and forthcoming works:

Frank Testimony- is the heart-pounding break out novel by one of America’s next best selling authors. The road to death row at the notorious Parchman Farm Penitentiary was long and difficult for Frank Burchill. He inherited a fortune when the woman he loved was murdered, but gave it away in the blink of an eye to avenge her death. Set in the rural town of Bedford in Nathan County Mississippi, the turbulent climate of the south is the backdrop for this spellbinding legal thriller.

The Coming Of T'Loal- A Cthulhu Mythos arc. Two college friends stumble onto an ancient religious cult with links to the present while assembling an exhibit for the Clay County Historical Society. Can Michael and Terry solve the mystery of the great T'Loal before the final battle? Or will the Great Old Ones and the Elder Gods engage in an interdimensional battle that will determine the fate of humanity? For anyone who loves H. P. Lovecraft and the mythos he created.

Forthcoming:

My champion City Series of hard boiled pulp detective novels including the titles: Cold Rain, Murder@yourstruly.com, Russian Roulette,

Here is what readers are saying about Frank Testimony-

Gripping and engaging- Prof. Thomas Smith

Interesting and evocative, a real page turner- Dr. H. Angus

Bloody Brilliant- S. Wilbye

Mystery suspense writer, J. Walt Layne is the author of the gripping and irresistible novel Frank Testimony and the forthcoming Champion City series of pulp detective novels. His first published work The Coming of T’Loal (Cthulhu Mythos) was penned with long time friend and H.P. Lovecraft aficionado J. T. O’Connor. Born, raised and currently residing in Springfield, Ohio with his wife and three children he attends Urbana University as a full time student of Business and Human Services. He works full time as an Accounting Manager in a firm he founded with his wife. He has been writing stories since a very young age, often spending sixteen hours or more with pen in hand or at the keyboard.

A devoted husband and father of three girls, he enjoys the few stolen moments to read to his two year old, or coach and encourage the two eight year olds- one a budding writer, the other a rather skillful artist. A ten-year veteran of the United States Army, he remains an ardent supporter of all things patriotic, though he occasionally indulges in political satire.

What I write...

Fiction-Mystery, Suspense, Thriller, Pulp Detective Stories, Espionage and the occasional Political Satire. In truth, I write in most any style that strikes me at a particular moment. Some projects just don’t lend themselves to my current schedule, but my muse doesn’t see it that way.

When I write...

I’m writing now. Another writer I know- one far more successful than ,I said that to be a writer means that you have to read and write- a lot!! This is very true.

Why I write...

It’s a compulsion really. I am much happier when I am writing. When I finish a big project I experience something akin to post-partum depression and for weeks (or, in the case of Frank Testimony, months) I experience a sort of depressive withdrawals. I do love to write, and I love to read a good story, preferably some epic tale that just draws me in and takes me to a different time and place where I can get absorbed in the lives of the characters. I hope that my writing should do the same for my readers.

My fictional works include the legal thriller Frank Testimony, The Coming of T’Loal -a Cthulhu mythos arc, a trilogy of spy novels, An Ultra Violent Techno-Thriller called Carnage, A Dozen Songs, a fantasy/horror piece called The Land beyond the Mirror.

Also forthcoming:

The Champion City Series of pulp detective novels written in the hard boiled style, starring gumshoe Thurman Dicke.

Hard Up- a Champion City Pulp Serial

The Champion. A neo pulp super hero comic set where else, Champion City...
