For sixty years, Maryland has produced a who’s who of successful musicians. Ranging from jazz greats like Duke Ellington and Billie Holliday, to rapper Tupac Shakur, to R&B stars like Mario, Toni Braxton, Mya, and Dru Hill, to rockers Good Charlotte and artists from every genre in between, the crab state has provided the foundation for more than its fair share of top music acts to this country.
The next hope coming out of the state’s largest city is pop singer Crista Cappelletti. From her childhood days of mimicking Madonna and Michael Jackson, it was evident that the musical future was bright for the Italian songstress. While a teen, Crista was invited to try-out for a female pop group being put together in Miami . While there, Crista’s vocal ability was seen by underground rap legend Kingpin Skinny Pimp, known for his work with famed rap group Three 6 Mafia. After ultimately being selected as one of the group members, Crista faced her first big industry choice: sign with the girl’s group or accept an offer to collaborate and be featured on Skinny’s next album. With her eyes on the prize sooner rather than later, Crista packed her bags for Atlanta to trade hooks for raps with Skinny while turning down the offer from the girl’s group.
Crista’s journey has allowed her to work with some of the top producers on the East coast, including The Inkredibles and Sobe Entertainment CEO/rapper Stack$, while also being able to showcase her vocal ability by being invited to perform at professional sports events. Industry heavyweight Ne Yo invited her backstage to meet him after his managers at Compound Entertainment were impressed by listening to some of Crista’s tracks.
Blue crabs and football isn’t all Maryland has to offer. In time, Crista Cappelletti will add her part to Maryland ’s musical legacy which is as rich as ever.
