I enjoy hugs and stepping on crunchy leaves. Recently, I discovered an old, dust covered case that contained every single cassette tape I owned as a child. As I thumbed through the titles—Raffi, Chicken Soup with Rice, Sharon, Lois, and Braham—I came across one that I did not remember seeing. Red and clearly different from all the others, the label read “Crista Leigh, age 4” in my mother’s cursive. Curious, I popped the tape into my player, and was amazed at what I heard. “This is Crista Leigh, and you are listening to News Center 6—Kids’ News”, my nearly inaudible voice said. What I was listening to was, in fact, my very first radio show. The fifteen minute tape consisted of a weather report, a very off-key (and incorrect) version of me singing the New Kids on the Block hit “Step By Step”, and an in-depth interview with my plastic bunny bank. I reported live from my bedroom, where I was being punished for angrily throwing a cookie at my month old baby sister. I related the highlights of the day—finger painting in art class, the boy who tried to steal my nap mat—and confessed my dream of one day becoming the next Miss America. Could this have been the beginning of my broadcasting dreams, or of the obsession with hearing myself talk? Whatever the case, this tape had been my first taste of my own private stardom.
