Cristal is the duo of Colombian artist & salsa DJ Fabio Jaramillo, MCing to the live music of DJ Sid, producer on Mental Groove Records.
MC Fabio, born '68 is actually one of the area's most experienced salsa DJs, firing 70s & 80s classics at sweaty latino dancefloors since over a decade. Fabio Jaramillo has worked as a plastic artist since the mid-nineties, as well as behind the scene of many an underground techno event. He hosts the weekly -and already legendary- Salsa Power webcasts on Basic.ch, Thursdays 10pm to midnight (GMT+1) since 1998.
Born in 1965 of Swiss origin, Sidney Stucki is a DJ since 1993 and a producer since 1995. He has released over twenty records, starting with minimal & experimental techno as well as electronic listening, for soundtracks and installations in the contemporary art domain. He has always collaborated with people from both the art and music scene and enjoys a worldwide reputation as a plastic artist, with dozens of exhibitions, installations and performances in numerous countries. Sid plays solo live sets of excellent and inventive minimal, organic techno and DJs techno & house in inimitable, slamming style.
Sid currently performs live as Cristal, with Fabio MCing. Cristal fuses techno and latin elements in a very dancefloor-effective way : a minimal, hard house groove flows throughout their performances, with waves of explosive latin percussion and sampling dropping in and out of the mix as Sid monitors the crowd's current vibe and adjusts the settings for maximum impact.
Meanwhile, the audience focuses on the persona of Fabio, dressed and primed for the occasion, delivering his friendly yet somewhat intimidating MC routine : he is the streetwise Colombian who knows his sharp grooves, shirts and knives. You answer his call to follow the music and dance harder, he's the brujo or sorcerer, there to guide and warn you.
Three vinyl releases and a fourth one out soon on Mental Groove Records, featuring sleeves that are works of art which doesn't come as a surprise from Sid and Fabio, experienced as they are in design and music. Cristal live adds another dimension to a music that one is already happy enough to own on record, a forward-thinking mix of scientifically advanced dancefloor techno and sizzling latin loops & cuts.
