Sounds Like
Hopefully like a Traditional New Orleans style Brass Band !!
THE CRITERION BRASS BAND. Edinburgh's best known New Orleans style brass band was formed in 1979 to play at the 1st Edinburgh International Jazz Festival and has continued ever since.
The Criterion styles itself on the traditional brass bands of New Orleans. Influences include the Onward, Eureka and Olympia Brass Bands
The Band usually performs as a 10 piece consisting of 8 musicians and 2 dancers leading the band.
It's the sound of the street, raw and rough and loose. Just like the rain and wind and snow we often have to play in!
It's the music of the street market and the county gala day parade , the sound of the footslog route march through the bunting bedecked council estates with a kilted accordian band behind us and a Scottish bagpipe band in front.
Watch us go as we follow the flocks of frozen children dressed up as fairies!
Now and then we play for a funeral when a jazz fan or a band member dies.
We look back over our shoulders to the men who first played their funky old tunes at sweaty funerals in New Orleans and at sun soaked picnics beside Lake Ponchartrain. No wonder the frost nipped Scottish faces look bemused when we shamble into view and our dancing girls shake their assets to Bourbon St Parade :-)
