Elettrorumorismi Futuristi

FUTURISTIC ‘ELECTRONISMS’

The year 2009 marks the 100th anniversary of the Futurist Avant-garde movement. As is well known, the founder of this movement was Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, born in Alexandria (Egypt) in 1876. One of the most important aspects of Futurism was its contribution in the sphere of music. The manifesto "Arte dei Rumori” [Art of Noises], written by the Futurist painter, Luigi Russolo, in 1913, set in train one of the most interesting chapters of a new musical vision. Massimo Croce, a member of the Italian group NetFuturista, proposes a project to celebrate the musical aspect of historic Futurism. Among the fundamental characteristics of the Futurist art movement was the exaltation of machines as a means through which the modern society of the future could be built. The artist, in collaboration with the students of the Don Bosco Technical and Professional Institute, will rebuild a prototype of the Intonarumori [Noise intoner]. The project also includes a working day in which the artist, Massimo Croce, will introduce the Futurist movement by creating the Art of Noise, starting with the "banal" noise of the city. In the evening, video projections and a concert will be held by sound-effects man Alfonso Santimone. The musicians Adham Hafez and Mahmoud Refaat, pioneers of electronic music under the influence of futuristic elements, and the singer Dina El-Wadidi play a very important role in whole event and Egyptian contemporary musical scene.

Elettrorumorismi Futuristi

In letteratura F.T.

Elettrorumorismi Futuristi 1909-2009 The Centenary of Futurism

My dear Pratella, I submit to your futurist genius these new ideas, and I invite you to discuss them with me. I am not a musician, so that I have no acoustic preferences, nor works to defend. I am a futurist painter who projects on a profoundly loved art his will to renew everything. This is why, bolder than the bolder professional musician, totally unpreoccupied with my apparent incompetence, knowing that audacity gives all prerogatives and all possibilities, I have conceived the renovation of music through the Art of Noises>>. Luigi Russolo

The Futurism

The Futurism was an international art movement founded in Italy in 1909. The Futurists loved speed, noise, machines, pollution, and cities. The “Manifesto of Futurism,” written by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti (Alexandria, Egypt, December 22nd 1876 - Bellagio, Italy, December 2nd 1944) and published on the front page of the French newspaper Le Figaro on February 20th 1909, proclaimed the burning desire of the author and his fellow Futurists to abandon the past and embrace the future.

The Art of Noises

Luigi Russolo (April 30th 1885 - February 4th 1947) was an Italian Futurist painter and composer, and the author of the manifesto The Art of Noises (1913). Russolo first studied music, but turned to painting in 1909 and met F.T. Marinetti, U. Boccioni, G. Severini, G. Balla and C. Carrà, with whom he signed the Manifesto of the Futurist Painters and the Technical Manifesto of Futurist Painting in 1910. Russolo was involved in all subsequent manifestos, campaigns and exhibitions by the Italian Futurists. In 1913 he dedicated The Art of Noises a manifesto formulated as a letter, to Ballila Pratella, the musician in the group, and moved on to become the Futurists’ actual musician. Russolo’s manifesto describes the transition from pre-nineteenth-century traditional music to the noise of modern life. Of himself and his Futurist colleagues he writes, “We enjoy creating mental orchestrations of the crashing down of metal shop blinds, slamming doors, the hubbub and shuffling of crowds, the variety of din, from stations, railways, iron foundries spinning wheels, printing works, electric power stations and underground railways.” He is one of the first theorist of electronic music. He built a number of different «Intonarumori» (noise intoners) with Ugo Piatti, and these caused an international stir at concerts from 1913. In 1915, Stravinsky, Prokoviev, Diaghilev and Massine met in Marinetti’s house to examine and report on the new instruments. Unfortunately, none of his original «Intonarumori» survived World War II. Russolo patented the «rumoramonio» (noise harmonium) in 1921, an enharmonic stringed instrument in 1925 and an enharmonic piano in 1931. Subsequently he occupied himself with occult sciences, writing the philosophical work «Al di là della materia» (Beyond Matter). In 1941-1942 Russolo started again to paint, with a new style that he defined "classic modernist". He died at Cerro di Laveno (province of Varese, northern Italy) in 1947. To honor the memory of the futurist composer, The Russolo-Pratella Foundation of Varese holds an annual international composition competition for electro-acoustic music. The Luigi Russolo Prize in Electro-Acoustic Music is one of the most prestigious awards in the field of electro-acoustic music.

“Wherever we are, what we hear is mostly noise. When we ignore it, it disturb us. When we listen to it, we find it fascinating. The sound of a truck at fifty miles per hour. Static between the stations. Rain. We want to capture and control these sounds, to use them not as sound effects but as musical instrument.”

John Cage

My approach to music is like the one of the great Italian Futurist Luigi Russolo (1885-1947). Obviously I’m using different instruments, but if I can do it is because Russolo, the big Genius Russolo, was the first musician who built new instruments to create souds-noises. Russolo made mechanical instruments, or better he built the last mechanical instruments, which are called "Intonarumori (noises-toner), after him the new instruments have been only electrical ones, up to now that we are using the best electrical instrument: the computer. Russolo has been like a zip between the old music and the new one. So why was Russolo the first modern musician? Because he was the first one who thought about the importance of playing with sounds produced by modern life. Russolo has been the first who imagined the new music reproducing new modern life, in his mind he imagined the first sampler, and his "Intonarumori was the first ‘sampler reproducing the noise of modern life in the city. Schömberg was the last classical musician and Russolo was the first modern musician, but history recognizes the important role of Schömberg, but doesn’t recognize Russolo’s one in all modern music, including pop and rock. The manifesto called The Art of noise was written in 1913 by Luigi Russolo, of course all modern music is based on some noises, this is why each one of my soundtracks are dedicated to Luigi Russolo and his manifesto for the new music. In my music I use two different kinds of noise: the noise which I record in the street of the city and the noise which is possible to produce with the all electronic instruments, like the synt, sampler, effects… and now there is also the computer and the big opportunity offered by internet. I’m here in this web site because I hope to meet someone who wants to create music with me through exchanging the sound-noises via internet. I think it would be a great opportunity finding someone who has sound-noise recording from the city, mixing them with mine, then using both of us the same sound-noise as base to create a soundtrack but each one of us on his own - and when we have finished our works, listening to the two different results we’ll have obtained.

Akhbar el adab 12th April 2009

Pink Floyd

STORIA COME MUSICA

U-CEF
Halalwood

First there was Hollywood…then Bollywood…and now…Halalwood, Morocco's first and foremost digitalizer's debut album for Crammed.

‘Halalwood’ is a tour-de-force which puts gnawa music, dub, sinuous classic Arabic arrangements for qanun, flute & violins, electronic beats, rappers & MCs, big drums & crunchy rock guitars in a giant blender to produce something fresh and original… U-Cef has all the legitimacy & inspiration needed to navigate between cultures, without any prejudices, disrespect or fear: Born and raised in Rabat, he absorbed much of his native Morocco's multiple traditions before moving first to New York and then to London, immersing himself along the way in the Western world's electronic & rock scenes. His first CD ‘Halalium’ (2001) was a milestone in Moroccan urban dance music, and has inspired a whole generation of rappers, b-boys and pro-tools adventurers, from Tangiers to Taroudant and Melilla to Marrakech.

Featuring an exciting cast of high-profile guests including Damon Albarn, Natacha Atlas, Rachid Taha, Mirror System (Steve Hillage & Miquette Giraudy), Oum Alright, UK Apache, Amina Annabi, Justin Adams and Moroccan rap duo Dar Gnawa.

Out NOW...
