Live performance of "Come To My Mountain" at Kepner's Tavern (Hudson, Ohio) on Sept 20, 2008.
CROOKED TIMBER is a two-man acoustic band (comprising Scott Ryan and Rob Maloni) that makes its music with such traditional and world instruments as guitars, bass, mandolins and djembe. The result is a pleasing, original acoustic sound with a variety of influences including folk, rock, bluegrass and country. Rounding out the songs are clever, thoughtful and sometimes cheeky lyrics that repay close and repeated listening. (The band's name, by the way, comes from a line attributed to philosopher Immanuel Kant: Out of the crooked timber of humanity, no straight thing was ever made.)
SCOTT RYAN
Scott has played various musical instruments since 1970 and the guitar since 1973. He has performed solo and in numerous bands spanning the last three decades, including Slumpuppy in the Kent/Akron area, and Gaan on Long Island and New York City. Scott blesses Crooked Timber with his lead vocals and incredibly intricate guitar work as the band's front man now. He is also responsible for the mindblowing lyrics found on just about every Crooked Timber song. Scott currently resides in Silver Lake, OH.
ROB MALONI
Rob began his musical career with a guitar in 1975 and has been in a number of bands since that time. Most recently he played with the Cotton Gin Band out of Northeastern Pennsylvania and with Three Friends in Scranton, PA. Rob provides rhythm guitar, bass, background vocals (with a few exceptions where he takes the front man job over from fellow Timber member, Scott), and percussion on a few songs for Crooked Timber. Rob can be found hiding in the woods behind a tree somewhere in Stow, OH.
SCOTT AND ROB
Scott and Rob met in early 2005 and found that their individual styles meshed quite nicely and that their vocals blended well also. Those discoveries made, Crooked Timber was born and the boys have been playing ever since.
Hoo boy. These come from all over the musical map.
Naturally, and obviously, we've been deeply influenced by all the well-known acoustic singer/songwriters -- Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot, every combination of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and/or Young, the late Jim Croce and his partner/lead guitarist Maury Muehleisen, Seals & Crofts, Paul Simon (with and without Art Garfunkel), and too many others to mention.
But you'll also hear elements of country, bluegrass, Southern rock, and other classic rock music: the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Marshall Tucker Band, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Doobie Brothers, the Eagles, Bad Company, Hank Williams, Hank Williams Jr., Willie Nelson, Kathy Mattea, a long list of musicians associated with bluegrass and/or "newgrass" and/or "jamgrass," and -- again -- too many others to mention. Jethro Tull, Frank Zappa, and Rush belong on the list of influences as well, even though we don't sound anything like them at all.
There are undoubtedly lots of others that we've forgotten to list. (Pink Floyd, Al Stewart, America . . . ) And not all of them are "recent" even by the standards of our generation; our cover material includes our own arrangements of such Great American Songbook gems as Summertime, Ain't Misbehavin', and Fly Me To The Moon. And no doubt there's plenty of other world music that deserves mention here -- Irish and Scottish folk music, for instance.
Speaking of which, one of our current favorite bands is the Old Blind Dogs (a Scottish group of whom Scott has been a fan for about ten years now; he introduced Rob to them a few years ago). Scott is also a fan of Railroad Earth, an acoustic jam band out of the New Jersey area who really ought to get to Ohio more often.
We have been asked "How do I get my hands on your CD?" Well, we're happy to say that it's getting EASIER! Not only is "I Don't Care If It Rains A Little" in it's second printing, local music stores are carrying it, including Borders on Howe Ave in Cuyahoga Falls as well as Time Traveler Music located on State Road in the Falls and their new location on Main Street in Hudson, Ohio. In addition, the CD will ALWAYS be available at our shows and individual tracks can be purchased for a nominal fee right here on our MySpace site.
When the new web site is up and running, you will be able to purchase the CD online as well as T-Shirts (Which shamelessly flaunt the Crooked Timber name), and anything else we can stamp a logo on and make a buck from.

Back to Recording
Crooked Timber is back in our basement studio recording what promises to be a spectacular second CD. Scott has written some real gems for this one, and we are both very excited about the direction the music is taking. While the Crooked Timber sound basically remains the same, the music will be taking on the added dimension of full percussion which should really round out the sound. The overall effect is what we consider to be a brilliant sequel so far to "..Rains A Little" . The new music will be performed at all shows leading up to the CD release, so make sure to come out and give a listen.
We'll let you all know when the release date is set.
