Crude Oz started out in 2007 with Paolo Vivas on drums, Lenin Lara on bass and Deo Cruz on guitar and vocals. It was born out of the latter's desire to record songs he wrote when he was in college.
The band's original name was Bananaskyflakes. The story behind this name: there was a time when the band's lead vocalist went on a diet of banana, graham crackers and Skyflakes (a brand of soda crackers in the Philippines), thus the name.
The name Crude Oz is an anagram. It's also a reference to the Wizard of Oz.
In July 2009, their debut album entitled Straightjacket was launched at Club Dredd, Eastwood City. The album was self produced and contains 12 tracks. Because of a limited budget, It took the band 2 years to make. All tracks were recorded at Skunk Studios in Pasig with Dodjie Garcia co producing. Except for Sine and Straightjacket, all drums were recorded by Paolo.
In 2009, the band acquired new members: Marvin Bea on lead guitar and Wendell Quinto on drums (replacing Paolo). The song Straightjacket was the first song recorded by the band's newest members.
The band was featured on The Philippine Daily Inquirer.
All the band members are married except Marvin.
