I've already notified the wet hard hands of the Constable, and tonight, when the Witching Hour breaks into cold little beads of sweat and the chests of nervous angels heave and their breasts threaten to burst like popped balloons, making their white feathers as red as the maiden's door, there will be shadows held still in the shadows, that are friends of the Constable. He fitted me with a shotgun. The very kind that every man here will likewise be in proper control of in the shadows. And when we see the painter coming down the damp steps of the rotten cellar, we'll all become less substantialized with shadow, growing into a fully realized wall of particles intent on driving out the life from the painter's unlucky body. We all have our desires for the maiden, and we all have our pink slips to show for what we also did to the Manager at the factory. The Constable swung an eye at me, winking, knowing too well that the jailhouse would be empty tonight but the graveyard would earn secret flesh. We laughed and paid our tab at the Tavern and broke into the night, shattering the silly little windows of Hell that dared keep out the cold. My heart raced. My landlords waited.
