Shaun Gilmour, is a Pennsylvania based drummer who was an original member of a wide number of groups, including the critically acclaimed garage-funk/soul band The New Alcindors. His drumming is heavily rooted funk, jazz and rock. Influences include both old and new drummers - Matt Chamberlain, Stanton Moore, Tony Williams, Brian Blade, and Billy Martin to name a few. He draws inspiration from a diverse set of musical sources including deep funk and soul music, The New Orleans music scene, live drum and bass, jazz and experimental rock.
Gilmour grew up in Williamsport, PA where he studied jazz and rock drumming extensively with Bob Leidhecker, Yamaha Drum clinician and drummer for the Grammy nominated Empire Brass. After high school Gilmour studied percussion at Indiana University of PA and marched with both the Bridgemen and Blue Coats snare lines until a bout with carpal tunnel syndrome nearly sidelined him in 1989.
Gilmour moved to Pittsburgh in the early 90’s and became involved in the music scene of the steel city. While in Pittsburgh he was a member of Three Ring Binder, The Happy Accidents (voted one of the best unsigned bands in the U.S. by Dick Clark and Coca-Cola), and The New Alcindors. Gilmour also formed and lead two of his own funk groups - The Scoville Unit and New Soul Theory which garnered accolades from Jazziz Magazine.
In 2003 Gilmour put drumming aside to tour as drum tech with Florida based swamp soul band Mofro which supported Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, as well as Galactic, Jeff Beck, and B.B. King on two nationwide tours.
In 2006 Gilmour returned to drumming when he joined forces with former Three Ring Binder guitarist Rob Carey in the fusion band Grimace. 2007 saw a move back to Williamsport and an immersion in the music scene of his home region.
Shaun has performed with The New Alcindors, New Soul Theory, Mofro, Liza Oxnard, Gary Burton, Vinx, Jamie Notarthomas, Phil Driscoll and The Happy Accidents. He has also shared the stage with Yes, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, The Sugarman Three, Drums and Tuba, The Mooney Suzuki, and Sahara Hot Nights to name a few. And he was most recently elected to the board of directors at Williamsport's premier independent music school, the Uptown Music Collective
Gilmour fronts his own project called MonoRail, which is an all improvisational live drum & bass/breakbeat jazz group. He can regularly be found performing with The Dirty Nickels, The Lynn and Farley 4 (with Dave Lynn, Sean Farley, and Jimmy Lovcik), and the jazz trio Blue Magnolia
