One day while at home in the bath smoking and watching his portable television, Fidel Castro, President of Cuba, shook his head so vehemently in contempt at some misadventure of the US State Department that a small child fell out of his beard into the bubbles. "Cojones!" exclaimed El Lider, "I have given birth to the future." "Ayudame cabron!" piped a tiny voice from the water "I jam the Cuban Cowboy." The Great Man was momentarily stunned by this response: his jaw dropped; his cigar slipped into the water with a plop and sizzled. The boy, seeing that he was left to his own devices, scrambled over the rim of the tub and leapt to the floor. There he turned, hesitated, saluted his progenator smartly, and then was off across the tiles, out the bathroom window and into the streets of Havana where he was immediately lost in the crowd. Mixing indie rock with traditional Cuban music ain’t easy, but it makes for one hell of a ride. The Cuban Cowboys bring a post-punk sensibility to the heart of the Buena Vista Social club. Armed with mambo riffs,swooning surf guitar, and a killer live show, the band is steadily building a following across the US. They’re touring in support of their debut album “Cuban Candles”, the musical chronicle of one family’s exile experience.
"Cuban Candles," entered CMJ’s Latin Alt.Chart at 84, and climbed to 2 after only four weeks. It went as high as 15 on the World chart. NPR in California named "Cuban Candles" among 2007’s top-10 releases, and Newsday said the album was “destined to become a classic intersection between roots rock and Cuban Son.” With a live EP set for release in early 2008, the band hopes to continue winning new fans and spreading el word.
