The Chemical Brothers, Plump DJs, Fatboy Slim, Dave Robertson, Leftfield, James Zabiela, Orbital, Soul of Man, Chris Vaux, Simon Blann, 2manydjs, Justin Robertson, Richie Hawtin, Nic Fanciulli, Erick Morillo, Carl Cox, Tiefschwarz, Pete Tong, Fergie, Erol Alkan, Krafty Kuts.
Rich Thomas and Mike Lumsden aka The Cubists met in 2005 after a mural love of The Chemical Brothers and electronic music, which they had both been interested in for many years before. The pair began attending more and more chemical gigs together, with Rich soon introducing Mike to a local techno/house night called Punchfunk in their hometown of Portsmouth.
At Punchfunk they would see many world class dj’s as well local talents such as Chris Vaux, Simon Blann and Junior Gee, who gave much musical inspiration to Rich and Mike. One local dj in particular called Dave Robertson also influenced Rich and Mike heavily, through both his productions and ground breaking live sets played using ableton software.
In the past Rich and Mike had both dabbled in djing, through hearing great electronic music at nights such as Punchfunk, FiLtH and Together music they decided to take up djing together using ableton software, similar to Dave Robertson. Soon after in July 2006 they began there own small local night called Electrologic, where they would play in a small bar in Gosport to friends and locals, learning many different djing skills. As time went one Rich and Mike gradually gathered some bookings playing local nights and various student unions. Their first major in Portsmouth booking came in February 2007, when they played at the Out-Break, a local break beat night ran by now good friends Promo and Ignition, where Rich and Mike impressed the crowd with a mixture of explosive techy breaks.
As time progressed Rich and Mike continued to attending local and national nights, seeing a variety of different djs including James Zabiela, Plump Djs, Justin Robertson and 2manydjs, all of which helped Rich and Mike to find there eclectic sound of tech-house, acid-house, breaks and electronica. Being eager to play out more often to more people, in October 2007, The Cubists joined forces with Rich's best friend Chris Taylor aka Rogue State, forming a new monthly night in Portsmouth called Error. Error allowed The Cubists a platform to play a mixture of different records than inspired them and to support other local dj’s.
The Cubists are now gradually developing a live/dj hybrid set using various midi controllers, effects units, mixers and computer software, allowing the border between djing and live performance to merge closer and closer. The Cubists do not only mix other artists records, but also there own tracks, loops and samples widening the possibilities of performance of electronic music!
