Cult TV's Interests
|
| General | Extraordinary Television series from the last 60 years, be it some of the classics, including the works of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson (Thunderbirds, UFO, Captain Scarlet), Star Trek, Doctor Who, Buffy, Angel, The A Team, The Avengers, right through to the new Cults (or will they just be FADS?) of the likes of HEROES, LOST, 24, HEROES, PRISON BREAK, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (classic or new) and TORCHWOOD. | | Music | Many Cult TV fans are stuck in the 1980s, at a time when New Romantics ruled the Charts! So, top of the pile are the likes of Ultravox, The Human League, Spandau Ballet, Japan, Duran Duran - yeah, anything with a Synth and a crazy haircut (or moustache!). | | Movies | Although the film genre is not really our bag, we make time for the likes of The Italian Job, Silent Running, the Back To The Future Trilogy, both Bill & Ted's, and of course any TV-show related big screen stuff - Thunderbirds, The Sweeney, Star Trek, etc. | | Television | So many to choose from, here's a random ten from the past to get you going...
UFO
When you'd grown up on kids shows devised by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, having an adult series from the same team was a joy. Brilliant music, incredible special effects, complex stories, and it tackles taboo subjects. Best show ever?
THUNDERBIRDS
In the 1960s and 1970s it was easy to get the Dinky Toys, but where on Earth did people get the Century 21 Toys from? We always wanted that Thunderbird 5 they produced, and their Thunderbird 3. With that sort of impact on your life, it has to be in most boomers' Top Tens!
CAPTAIN SCARLET AND THE MYSTERONS
The best commentary on the nature of war that there has ever been. That's the adult speaking. The child in everyone still wants to go to a petrol station and commandeer an SPV.
SWORD OF JUSTICE
13 episodes of a modern day Count of Monte Cristo. Wrongly imprisoned for embezzlement, there was something about Jack Martin Cole that triggered empathy in many a teenager, and even today we still cheer on the underdog! And remember; The Spade is the Sword of Justice, its rapier marks the end.
VENGEANCE UNLIMITED
Another short-run series on a similar theme. Wouldn't YOU long to have a mysterious stranger offer to solve your problems, all with the seemingly cheap price of a favour at a time in the future? If life was only that easy. The fact that you can dream of what could be is the appeal of this series.
STRANGE REPORT
The rapport between the three principle characters is pure gold, the plots offbeat and unusual, and the theme music destined to one day get adopted by some TV series of lesser standing.
DEPARTMENT 'S'
One of the people we really wish we'd met was Dennis Spooner, who was allegedly responsible for the pre-credits teasers that were the making of this series. We defy anyone not to be intrigued by the introduction to any of this show's episodes.
STAR TREK - THE NEXT GENERATION
Some folk treasure witnessing the indignation of original, classic Star Trek fans when this series came out. You know, the sort who could name you third red shirt from the left, but couldn't tell you who original Trek producer Herb Solow was! The best series in the franchise, the characters were real, and the stories still challenging.
THE PRISONER
Some 30-somethings and early 40-somethings may have a vague memory of a late-night 1970s repeat of this - and if it may have been the episode The Girl Who Was Death you first saw - which is hardly representative of the series, then heaven knows what you thought it was all about! The Channel 4 first screenings converted me to its themes of exploring individuality, social engineering, personal freedom and the like, for a cultural studies student, were life-changing.
THE A-TEAM
Hannibal was the star for some, or maybe Murdock was your option? The ladies seemed to prefer Faceman, and the kids like B.A. - Comedy, action, great characters. It's only now that people are realising what a great show this was.
... and from the modern day, we can't really get by without a fix of Ugly Betty, Boston Legal, Dream Team or CSI (any flavour). What's your bag? | | Books | There's so many books on television, and most are not worth the paper they're printed on. Exceptions include "The Complete Directory of Prime Time Network Shows" and Mark Lewisohn's Encyclopedia of TV Comedy. | | Heroes | Jack Bauer ("24"), Derek Meddings, Lord Lew Grade, Sylvia Anderson, Ed Straker ("UFO") - we have so many!. |
