Phil Brökelmann, the Curl Curl Music label owner, releases his debut solo 12” Black Dog, supported by Sebo K, Afrilounge, James Priestley, Martin Landsky, Mark Henning, Estroe.
Featuring remixes by Dan Drastic (Hairy Claw, Moon Harbour) and Pied Plat (Rush Hour) the record offers underground sound for the minimal club dj as well as for lovers of Detroit techno. Phil Brökelmann original Black Dog continues the organic house direction he went down with his previous Shortboard releases.
Phil Brökelmann three years ago moved from Germany to New Zealand. His DJ sets have won the hearts of ravers in clubs from Watergate in Berlin, to Honkytonks in Melbourne and his current home club Ink in Auckland.
As A&R at Curl Curl Music he introduced the northern hemisphere to new talents from Australia & New Zealand like Opensouls, Deepchild and Simon Flower.
Shortboard 12" with remixes by Simon Flower (Poker Flat, Moon Harbour) and Deepchild (Future Classic, Curl Curl)
Whether you call it minimal-afro-techno or whatever, Simon Flower’s remix is a thrill. We almost lost our shit with excitement over this long remix with playful sections. Think Perlon, or Cadenza, but slightly different! New Zealander Simon Flower is one to watch. His Japan-inspired track Shinjuku Skyline (CURL 006) paved his way to last year's excellent 12" releases on Moon Harbour and Pokerflat.
Soft and warm, the original Mornin’ Tide by Shortboard is something of a risky early-morning-rave track, emotional music, that could either empty the dance floor or give everybody good karma, following on the acoustic-meets-digital heels of Shortboard’s debut Together.
Seamlessly integrating elements of jazz, techno, and field recordings (skateboarding!) into one music, Mornin’ Tide is equal parts Gerard Masters (jazz keyboards) and Phil Brökelmann (production).
For his remix, Deepchild (of CURL 001, CURL 002 and Future Classic fame) fuses deep techno kicks with dubby bleeps and electric noise. Someone down at the comments said it reminded him of early Matthew Herbert. Thanks! In other words, the Sydney native has crafted a sublime warm up/cool down track for the minimal DJ.
CURL 006: Played by Anja Schneider, Steve Bug, Josh Wink, Sasse and Mathias Schaffhauser, far away Simon Flower from New Zealand flies a flag for so-called minimal house (a real misnomer), because there are actually more intricacies and progressions happening in his music than in a Woody Allen plot. For a while Simon Flower released on his own imprint Nurture. “Shinjuku Skyline” was his first release outside his own label. Simon Flower regularly plays live laptop sets at choice Auckland club “Ink”, and recently performed at "Watergate" in Berlin and “Neighborhood” in London. He recently remixed Shahrokh (Compost Black Label) amongst other peeps.
The Luna City Express remix picks up the deep original and transports it into powerful minimal dancefloor pleasure. Berlin’s own Luna City Express simply know what works right now. Their remix builds and builds and always holds the peak back until it – finally – rains. This minimal peaktime remix rolls like an avalanche. Luna City Express also release a new mix label compilation on Moon Harbor soon.
We fell in love with Shahrokh because of his jacking “Owlflight” (Compost). Originally from Iran, Shahrokh now resides in Karlsruhe. A really nice guy, he hangs out with Ame if he is not busy running his own “Mood Lounge” club. Shahrokh’s skill to distill the sound essentials and amplify them is remarkable and effective. Think Watergate or Harry Klein at 5am. No fiddling around, just jacking bass.

Phil, thanks so much for the records... it's so rare these days to receive a 12inch package in the mail :) What's even more exciting is that both releases are EXCELLENT. My favourite cuts are the Dan Drastic mix of "Black Dog" and the original mix of "Mornin' Tide"... I expect to play them both heaps. Thanks again and all the best, Mike
