James Cummings - Cut And Sussed Records's Interests
General
Most stuff......Surfing probably the most important tho!
Music
The studio is available for all kinds of recording and is not genre specific. Girl groups, soul singers, rock bands, string quintets- they've all been in the studio at some point.
On a personal note i generally like to try and support new music, and really like deep soul, funk, world music and the jazzy/techy/deep side of house music. (whatever that is)
My favourite live band for the last couple of years has been the Electro outfit called
The Bays, and yet just recently i did some live sound for a kind of indie punky rock band called
Kill Kenada and they kicked ass.... so i guess im open minded about music as long as it's played with conviction!
I perform a DJ set twice weekly with live musicians at the Apartment bar Newcastle and as such work with the percussionist Paris of the Percussionauts, and the saxophonist James Vargas every week.
Anything remotely amusing and frankly, the more subversive the better! Spinal Tap is an all time favourite, along with Caddy Shack, Cohen Brothers movies like The Big Lebowski, most of Kevin Smiths films rock......
Television
Pretty much only watch surf films and programmes on the extreme sports channel, Planet Earth, the Simpsons and Have I Got News For You. Generally not a big telly person.
Books
I really like Elmore Leonard books like Get Shorty (Rum Punch) and Jackie Brown etc, but generally dont read that much. Mikhail Bulgakov's 'The Master and Margarita' is a classic (and a damn sight easier read than Dostoevsky), and Bill Bryson writes great books. I find Pro Audio monthly a riveting read....ish.
Heroes
Kelly Slater, Tiger Woods, Roger Federer, Shaun White/Terje Haakonsen, Tony Hawk, John Bonham, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Howard Marks, Hunter S Thompson..... Jesus dont get me started.....!
Theres also a strong case for all the people who come to the studio making this list as well so heres a few photos of them:
Who I'd like to meet: I would like to meet people looking to record music in the North East of England, promoters looking to have professional live sound work performed at events, artists looking to advance their careers by recording demos and everything in between. From cabaret singers to jazz bands, from metal to electro, from DJ mixes to video soundtrack post production- if you are looking to get a professional sound then get in touch.
I would also like to meet Soul/Funk/Jazz singers, Jazz musicians (guitarists, percussionists etc etc) and other such people who are interested in working with me and performing live at The Apartment Newcastle,
www.apartment-luxebar.com bar on collingwood street in Newcastle where i hold a dual residency on Thursdays and Fridays. Equally, any club owners who are looking to add to their resident DJ rosters, or need someone who is a qualified live music specialist to oversee live events would also be welcome. Have a look at the Tracks section of my website for DJ mixes and original music productions.
Finally, of course, it would be pretty cool to stay in touch with all the friends i dont get to see as often as i would like!
