Rather than refer to myself and others as "owners" of animals, I now refer to myself and others as "guardians" of our animal companions and to animals as "he" or "she" rather than "it". I urge you to do the same.

Animals, like all sentient beings, are entitled to basic rights in our society. Deprioved of legal protection, animals are defensless against exploitation and abuse by humans.
1. The right of animals to be free from exploitation, cruelty, neglect and abuse.
2. the right of laboratory animals to not be used in cruel or unnecessary experiments.
3. the right of farm animals to an environment that satisfies their basic physical and psychological needs.
4. The right of companion animals to a healthy diet, protective shelter, and adequate medical care.

An EU-wide ban on the trade in cat and dog fur will come into effect on 31 December 2008 Thank you to every individual - every group who has worked so hard to bring us to this far - :)

How would it feel to have no power to stop a very frightening and painful thing happening to you? How would it feel to cry and not be heard? How would it feel to be crammed into a box with say 30 other beings, and then go on a long journey with no food or water... How would it feel to reach the end of that journey and be thrown from the top of a truck? And how would it feel to then be beaten and skinned? And how would it feel if you were still alive...?
If you believe fur should be worn by animals and not by people... If you believe the fur trade is as dead as all the helpless animals caught up in it, then please sign the petition to give these poor creatures a voice and a chance to live.

HELP - HELP - STOP THE SLAUGHTER OF DOLPHINS !
November 2007
" Picture a school of dolphins splashing about off the coast. Suddenly their peaceful lives are interrupted by the extremely loud sound of banging on metal bars. In an attempt to flee the deafening noise, the entire pod finds itself trapped in a confined space, where Japanese fishing fleets surround, capture and kill these most intelligent marine mammals.
I've devoted my adult life to penetrating the complex universe of dolphins. Each encounter with these magnificent creatures evokes awe and admiration in me. For more than 25 years, I've traveled to Japanese fishing villages, my mission always the same: Tell the world about the slaughter.
Each time I witness this hunt - which claims the lives of over 20,000 dolphins each year - I have to tell myself: "Just keep filming, just keep filming." It's not always easy - fishermen have threatened and chased me. They're always after my film because they know if the rest of the world could see what I see their dolphin hunting days would be a thing of the past.
To get a sense of what I'm talking about, check out this video, which includes narration by Matt Damon. Please note that some of the footage is quite graphic.
These butchered dolphins are sold off to restaurants, grocery stores and even school cafeterias. Many parents are unaware that their children's school lunches are chock full of mercury and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as PCBs and Dioxins. Two Taiji city councilmen have gone so far as to label meat from dolphins "toxic waste" due to its high mercury content.
The truth is the impact of these hunts on the marine mammal populations is unknown due to the lack of good population size estimates for the various targeted species. Scientists also don't know the extent of the disruption the massacre causes on the complex social structure of the dolphins or the effect on the ecosystem of removing so many large animals out of a small area.
I may not be a welcomed visitor of Japan, but I never feel alone in my quest to end the slaughter. I know I've got friends back at home, like all the Oceana supporters that wrote to the Japanese Embassy last year on this issue. We generated over 25,000 letters, and this year we want to get even more. How many is enough? We'll know it when the hunt is called off.
