I make plaster casts of rockstars’ and other
talented peoples’—ahem—appendages. Been doing it since the Swinging 60's,
when my best friend and I were shy young schoolgirls wanting to get laid by
British band members. Popping the plaster question was the logical solution to our
virginity problem. I figured that one thing would lead to another; sex would
transpire—and we’d take home a hell of a souvenir. Believe me, I had no idea
what my goofy idea would lead to.
The collection grew and so did the legend of The Plaster Casters of Chicago,
as we called ourselves. Jimi Hendrix posed for us. Frank Zappa came along and
declared my Groupie schtick an art form. He flew me out to L.A. and financed
my life so that I could collect more casts to exhibit at a proper art gallery.
Unfortunately, this did not come to pass until several years after Frank’s
untimely death. The grand debut of my collection, “The Life Casts of Cynthia
Plaster Caster” happened in June 2000, at Threadwaxing Space in New York City.
Two years later ArtRock Gallery in San Francisco hosted another show, which
included the “Love Portraits” I had drawn in the 60’s when I was an art school
major.
Nowadays, I still cast my net over willing “superheroes” whose music or art
I adore. A breast wing has recently been added to the collection. Luckily,
these and other manifestations of my Plaster Madness were captured on film and
can be seen in the amazing documentary “Plaster Caster,” available on DVD
internationally. To find out more, go to www.plastercaster.com.
Not too long ago, the Cynthia P Caster Foundation was established to help struggling artists and musicians. The plan is to give out grants via money raised from donations and sales of my art.
Well, it’s been a long, hard…fun, funny, fun Road to Plaster. Now it’s time
to write the Life and Times. And I’m totally on the case! Tentatively called
“Done Dick,” my autobiography is scheduled for release in 2007.
