Gospel Superfest's 2004 New Artist Showcase winner, Cynthia Turner and
Heartspeak, hail from Central Illinois. Formally created in 2000, this
10-voice ensemble is led by Dr. Cynthia Turner, a native of Portsmouth, VA
and graduate of North Carolina A&T State University (Greensboro, NC) and the Ohio State University (Columbus, OH). She currently lives in Champaign, IL, and her ensemble, Heartspeak, consists of: Scharema
Hannibal (Waukegan, IL), Vince Elam (Champaign, IL), sister vocalists,
Natalie and Stephanie Hamler (Chicago, IL), Lawrence Haynes (East St. Louis,
IL), mother-and-daughter vocalists, Kimberly and Whitney Keaton (Champaign,IL), Maritha Martin (Chicago, IL), and Raphael Smith (Chicago, IL). The group's name, Heartspeak, was inspired by Luke 6:45, "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good..for (out) of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh." With music written and produced by husband-wife duo, Kevin and Cynthia Turner, the group
independently released their debut project Just Because in 2002.
The ensemble's second effort, however, has not come easy. Specifically, in 2006, Turner faced a more pressing matter. She was diagnosed with breast cancer. Yet, after battling breast cancer in 2006-2007, Turner experienced first-hand the faithfulness of God as she ultimately claimed victory over this formidable foe. And consequently, with renewed excitement, she and her ensemble have wrapped up their sophomore project entitled, Til God Says So, and hope to garner further national attention with this cd album. With Turner's husband, stellar-nominated Kevin Turner serving again as producer, Til God Says So features guest appearances from such gifted musicians as Melonie Daniels (lead vocals), Sekou Bunch (bass), Lloyd Barry (horns), Ralph Lofton (organ), Mike Logan (keyboards), Tramaine Davis (piano), and a cadre of phenomenal drummers (Dennis Chambers, Oscar Seaton, Michael Weatherspoon, and Reggie Jackson). It is Turner's desire that this album will speak hope into the lives of others. And not just any hope, she submits. But as she puts it, "the hope that can only be found in Christ Jesus."
