About me: They can't say they weren't warned. Growing up in the Bible belt, the common wisdom was "You don't fool around with that stuff". But neither Richard Cook or Robert Logue were the kind to let that stop them. Even as the Carter Family sang "Keep On the Sunny Side", Cook and Logue went careening toward the dark side. Witchcraft, fantastical monsters, Ouija boards, occultism in all its forms found increasing voice in their work, even as friends and associates worried for their souls.
Desperate and degenerate artists of dubious renown, it made sense that these two would find each other and join forces in some nefarious venture --Cook, the half-insane hillbilly visionary, driven relentlessly by the hellhounds in his rearview, and Logue, the Christian school infidel with an unhealthy lust for witchcraft. It began innocently enough, if you can call their drunken misadventures across the South innocent. But soon enough, the Devil hitched along for the ride and a diabolical creative partnership was cemented. Naturally, the two chose to name their venture in honor of a notorious and powerful demon -Cypocryphy, one of the sinister names attributed to Tennessee's infamous Bell Witch. They've been cursed ever since.
Cook and Logue began working late into the night in an undisclosed location to create their distinctive, old-fashioned brand of dark art for an audience of similarly lost souls. Summoned from the depths, images of the dark gods appeared-Aleister Crowley, Jack the Ripper, Sweeney Todd, Vlad Tepes, Countess Elizabeth Bathory, Edgar Allan Poe, Bela Lugosi, Vincent Price. Hideous demon faces and garish satanic whores glared in bright ink from hand-printed posters. Brand new 'mystery talking boards' were produced. And even as the two worked, objects disappeared, mirrors crashed, the power failed and easy tasks went awry. Blood was spilled, the grass died outside the workshop and police searched the premises. Still, despite these ominous portents, the two carried on.
Soon they hit the highway to Chicago, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Louisville, to Indianapolis and Orlando, Lexington and Little Rock. Brand new tires went repeatedly flat, hearses shadowed them down rural highways, and mysterious fetishistic objects appeared in hotel rooms as they slowly built a name across the eastern United States. Supposedly fearless ghost hunters gave the two wide berth, spooked by the power of the mystery talking boards. Even Linda Blair, veteran nemesis of Captain Howdy, wouldn't touch the board. But Cook and Logue travelled with stacks of them. And wherever the two went, the beer flowed and the women shed their clothes.
They remain out there today, on the lost highway, peddling forbidden wares and possessed art. The two feel a sense of mission, facing demons and chasing witches from city to city, and a sense of fellowship with the lost and forgotten travelers with whom they share the road. Be sure, they are coming to your town, with hellhounds in the rearview, the grass dying on the roadside as they pass. But someone has to stand up to the forces of darkness, shine a light on them and frame them for your living room. Cook and Logue are those people.
