Divers instruments of music likewise to you unknown, some sweeter than any you have; with bells and rings that are dainty and sweet. We represent small sounds as great and deep, likewise great sounds extenuate and sharp; we make divers tremblings and warblings of sounds, which in their orig- inal are entire. We represent and imitate all articulate sounds and letters, and the voices and notes of beasts and birds. We have certain helps which, set to the ear, do further the hearing greatly; we have also divers strange and artificial echoes, re- flecting the voice many times, and, as it were, tossing it; and some that give back the voice louder than it came, some shriller and some deeper; yea, some rendering the voice, differing in the letters or articulate sound from that they receive. Abbiamo anche armonie che voi non avete, di quarti di toni e di note scivolate anche più piccole. Abbiamo alcuni strumenti musicali a voi ignoti, alcuni dei quali suonano più dolcemente dei vostri , e insieme campane e suonerie gentili e dolcissime. Noi facciamo sembrare piccoli suoni forti e profondi, e similmente forti suoni deboli e tenui, e sappiamo produrre diversi tremolii e varie vibrazioni in un suono originariamente continuo. Noi riproduciamo e imitiamo tutti i suoni e le lettere articolate, le voci e le note delle bestie e degli uccelli. Abbiamo certi congegni che applicati all'orecchio rafforzano l'udito, e anche diversi echi strani e artificiali, che ripetono le varie voci diverse volte e per così dire ripercuotendole. Alcuni rimandono le voci più acute di quanto sono state inviate, altri più profonde, mentre altri ancora le rimandano diverse nelle lettere e nelle articolazioni con cui furono pronunciate. Abbiamo anche strumenti per convogliare i suoni entro tubi e condotti, a grande ditanza anche tortuosa".
