Capoeira - trained two months before auditioning and 5 more months after getting the role, before filming started. And trained capoeira for a year after filming ended. Also trained in kung fu and boxing.

Mark is part Chinese, Spanish and Filipino on his father's side and Japanese and Irish on his mother's. Mark Alan Dacascos (born February 26, 1964, Honolulu, Hawaii) is an actor and martial arts expert, winning numerous karate and kung fu championships between the age of 9 and 18. [1] He has been featured in many action films such as "Only The Strong", "Crying Freeman", "Double Dragon", "Drive", "Kickboxer 5" and "Cradle 2 the Grave".
He has also appeared in the short-lived television series "The Crow: Stairway to Heaven" which was a follow-up to the 1994 film "The Crow".
His father, Al Dacascos, is a Filipino martial arts instructor of Malay, Spanish, and Chinese ancestry. His mother, Moriko McVey, is of Irish and Japanese ancestry. Dacascos refers to McVey as his "natural mother" and his stepmother, martial artist Malia Bernal, as his "second mother."
Beginning in January 2005, Dacascos has portrayed "the Chairman" on Food Network's Iron Chef America. This role was previously played by Takeshi Kaga in the original Japanese Iron Chef. IMDb previously incorrectly stated that Takeshi Kaga is his uncle on his mother's side. This likely stems from confusion over Dacascos playing the character of the nephew of "Chairman Kaga" in Iron Chef America. The misunderstanding most likely arose due to the fact that "Chairman Kaga" himself is a fictional character, and hence the stated relationship is actually between the two fictional characters. IMDb has since amended their information to correct this inaccuracy.
Dacascos became an actor after being discovered walking down the street in San Francisco's Chinatown by two men working for director Wayne Wang. Though Dacascos' first scenes ended up on the cutting room floor, he has gone on to establish a film and television career mostly playing martial artists.
Mark was considered for the role of Bruce Lee in the critically acclaimed biopic “Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story” (1993). The role was eventually given to Jason Scott Lee.
He is married to actress Julie Condra. Son, with Condra, born on 31 December 2000 in Oahu, Hawaii. He was named Makoalani Charles Dacascos. And Mark only drinks water and tea.
"The Crow: Stairway to Heaven" - With Season 1 ending on a cliffhanger, decent ratings, and good fan response, pre-production on season two began. It only got as far as the writing stage when Universal bought out PolyGram Productions. Universal canceled the show, stopping dead in it's tracks. Executive Producer Bryce Zabel made attempts at reviving the series, and then at a TV-movie that would wrap up the major loose ends of the series, but to no avail.
"Cradle 2 the Grave" - The casting of Mark Dacascos was the result of a poll on Jet Li's website where fans were asked who they would like to see him fight next!
"Crying Freeman" - Mark Dacascos and Christophe Gans choreographed the end sword fight. Mark does all his own stunts in the film. Julie Condra and Mark Dacascos met in this film, and then they married in real life. Based on the manga Crying Freeman. There is also an anime based on the same manga, "Kuraingu furîman".
