For years the spoken word was his escape from the confines of prison and the pain of heartbreak and the frustration of financial struggles it soothed his soul and calmed his anger. Spoken word is his release as he calls it “The priest that exorcises my Demons”. The spoken word saved his life and therefore is his life. So, If you haven’t heard him yet trust and believe you will. Jahbu Ourinde is a new breakthrough spoken word artist who has been traveling the country leaving in his wake a trail of scorched stages and mangled microphones. Having performed and holding his own, on the some the same stages with some of the greatest spoken word artists, such as , Talaam Acey, Sunni Patterson, Tommy Bottoms, Abyss, and countless others Jahbu has really made a name for himself for giving heart wrenching real to life performances that leaves the crowd wanting for more. He has also been on numerous radio programs such as , 97.9 in Charlotte NC, 103.7 in Atlanta and also various radio shows in his home town of Birmingham, Alabama and was also selected to be a poet for BET’s Lyric Cafe. Outside of radio and television spots , Jahbu has also created a organization called MOJA Inc. which teaches children between the ages of 9 and 18 the importance and technique of spoken word. He has also worked in the school system as a mentor for young men and women using the spoken word to allow them an avenue to display they’re talents as well as allow them to let they’re voice be heard. Along with working with high school children Jahbu has given seminars on the spoken word at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as well as Lawson State College in Birmingham. He is also in the finishing process of beginning a program to teach the art of spoken word to inmates in some of Alabama’s state prisons in a program sponsored by Auburn University starting in November of 2008. He also has two CDs out (One Man One Mic, What If?) and is in the process of another(Kallaboze and Rejekts) which will not only further display his skills on the microphone but also the skills of the unheard spoken word artist from his home state of Alabama.
“Well, never go forward with out giving back” is his motto.
