Seu Jorge, Zuco 103, Cibelle, Bebel Gilberto: The most exciting brazilian music is momentarily produced outside of Brazil. Mariana Da Cruz is a new one of these creative runaways.
After a solid career – first in a church-choir, after as a Bossa nova singer in Sao Paulo and Lisbon – she moved to the new world and stranded in Switzerlands capitol Berne Here she met the producer Ane H. who was – with his band Swamp Terrorists – one of the pioneers of Electro-Metal, toured the world from Japan to Brazil in the 80ies and 90ies and released ten grim records during these decades.
Without forgetting Marianas Brazilian roots, they started to create their unique style between Bossa Nova, Breakbeats, Jazz, Samba Rock and Electro. The music of Da Cruz is partly danceable and partly it is just disturbingly beautiful.
For the first album „Nova Estaçao“ Da Cruz worked – among others – with Duduka DaFonseca, the former drummer of Antonio Carlos Jobim ("Girl From Ipanema") who was jointly responsible for the greatest hits in the history of Brazilian music. In the USA, the CD was licenced by the label Six Degrees (Bebel Gilberto, CéU). Their great campaign, leaded DA CRUZ to the Top-10 of the CMJ World Charts.
The second album of Da Cruz is called "Corpo Elétrico" and was partly recorded in São Paulo and Berne/Switerland. It includes 14 new songs with participations of the percussionist Bolao (Dorival Caymmi, Ivette Sangalo, Nei Matogrosso) and the British producers Da Lata. The CD is distributed in 33 countries – in most of them, the release will be in the first part of 2009.

With my music I try to show, that there is a Brazil far away from carneval, bikinis and samba-plumes – there is also an urban, progressive, open but still romantic Brazil with a sane respect towards its traditions and culture.

Quando saiu do interior de São Paulo para Lisboa, Mariana da Cruz queria cantar em novos espaços, se deixar influenciar por diferentes tendências e, sem essa audácia, a modernidade que ela trouxe ao seu trabalho permaneceria só como sonho. Para alguém de família simples e que não pertence a uma linhagem de músicos, sua história acabou tomando o caminho mais raro: deu certo.
Em uma daquelas situações cosmopolitas típica a um viajante, a curiosidade mútua entre Mariana e os europeus fizeram com que ela se tornasse uma das principais atrações de um espaço cultural com estilo irlandês em "Bairro Alto" (o bairro artísitco de Lisboa) e cantando um show de música brasileira.
Como se não bastasse, foi no meio dessa confluência transglobal que o trabalho de Mariana chamou a atenção do produtor suíço Ane H, um dos precursores do electro-metal com a banda Swamp Terrorist de 1980. Posteriormente, o guitarrista e compositor Oliver Housmann veio a completar o grupo que recebeu o nome "DaCruz" e hoje têm base nos Alpes.
O CD "Nova Estação" compreende uma compilação de 13 das 20 faixas já gravadas e inéditas no Brasil, possui participação de Duduka da Fonseca (baterista de Tom Jobim), é editado na América do Norte pela SixDegrees (Cibelle, Bebel Gilberto, CéU) e na Europa pelo selo independente BoomJah Records.
Com um trabalho deliberadamente pop, dançante e de linguagem universal, o disco trás letras e voz brasileiras com experimentos rítmicos eletrônicos da Suíça. "Esse primeiro CD reflete muito mais uma fase de pesquisa e aproximação do mercado europeu do que o trabalho mais radical previsto para 2008, estamos amadurecendo muita coisa", anuncia Mariana.
As primeiras apresentações de DaCruz no Brasil acontecem durante o verão, começando com uma temporada na LoveLand(SP) nas quartas de dezembro e terminando em janeiro com duas apresentações em Paraty (RJ) e uma no StudioSP(SP).
Com berço e alma independentes, DaCruz fez parceria com a Livraria Da Vila para venda de um lote exclusivo de CDs para o Natal das lojas da rede. "Viemos ao Brasil porque queremos ver de perto a cena musical independente de São Paulo que tanto escutamos falar e também procuramos negociações para distribuir do nosso trabalho no Brasil e na América Latina", diz o suíço Ane H.

Aber genau um diese Musikwelt geht es in der audio-visuellen Lesung & Performance "Sonic Traces From the Arab World" von norient (Thomas Burkhalter, Simon Grab & Michael Spahr). Auf eine besondere Art werden Forschungsergebnisse aus dem Labor von www.norient.com präsentiert: Ungewohnte Töne aus der arabischen Welt werden gemixt, dazu entsteht eine Videocollage aus Eindrücken aus dem arabischen Raum, Found Footage und Video Clips. Das Ganze präsentiert norient als interaktive Live Performance. Die Performance wurde mit dem sitemapping Preis des Bundesamts für Kultur ausgezeichnet.

Having absolutley killed it at the previous 2 Videocrash nights Hexstatic was an obvious choice to invite back to Koko, and in looking for an act to match up to them The Nextmen were a clear option, with their live showcase and excellent turntable skills. To make it all that bit more special, and to fit in with the theme of the occasion, Hexstatic will be providing a visual accompaniment to The Nextmen's set! Awesome.
