The Daddy Mojo Story...
Not only do cigar box guitars have a great history, but these little guys are a heck of a lot of fun to play. Since we started building them, we just can't seem to put any of 'em down...as a result I'm afraid that all of our other instruments have been singing the blues out of neglect!
we've made quite a few of these so far…some have found themselves on recordings, some are in professional recording studios, and others are being used onstage by cats from all over the place! Each one has it's own unique sound and personality. They have a great muffled whining blues sound, one that just cannot be emulated with any other guitar. They're small, portable and almost indestructible. And let's face it...they're weird looking and attract major attention!
Acoustically, these instruments are LOUD for their size...But plug them in and they've got this great primitive bluesy vibe that i just haven't heard anywhere else!
Historically the origins of most cigar box guitars stemmed out of poverty...CBG's were made and played by Depression Era jug band members who specialized in making instruments out of anything. Follow in the footsteps of Blind Willie Johnson, Lightnin Hopkins, Hound Dog Taylor, Big Bill Broonzy and many other old-time blues legends.
Tune them how you want: I Tune most of mine in open G (but also try E5 for that great Delta vibe), or even in open D. There’s just loads of variations…experiment and you will reap the rewards! With a Daddy Mojo your technique gets stripped down to a bare-bones simple approach for both chord and melody work, reminding us of the fat sounds of the olden days.

Every time that we listen & write music... play an instrument... sing & dance... act in a play... or work in some audio/image/video engineering process... something is healing inside...
When we share it with friends... something is healing all over...

"Ticklin' The Strings" by Sweet Hollywaiians
Amazing Japanese hot string band playing 1920's, 30's, 40's style hawaiian, swing, calypso, blues, italian music and originals, featuring vintage instruments.3 songs with Robert Armstrong and Tony Marcus(from Robert Crumb and His Cheap Suit Serenaders)
"The Sweet Hollywaiians have probably the best feel for this 20's music of any string band working today. They manage the rare feat of sounding relaxed even when their playing is hot, are top notch musicians with tasteful arrangements and a full, rich, warm sound.Plus, they have a nice gamut of tunes, from King Nawahi to Giovanni Vicari to Bobby Leecan. See them live, if you can, for an unforgettable experience. If you can't, buy their Cds!" ~ Terry Zwigoff
