Growing up in a classical music enviornment.....I had many, many influences....
Everything was Bach to Shostakovich......
But then came a friend of mine (Beth Hicks) that turned me onto Celtic Music.
This opened my eyes to many different aspects of Fiddlin'.......I found out that the fiddle wasn't just a melodic instrument , but rhythmic as well. Add a little improv to a tune.....And there you have it.
I had also grown up listening to Elvis, Ted Nugent, Stevie Ray, Kansas, ELO, ELP, etc.........
Adding these sounds, that I heard in their music, worked really well with the Classic Celtic that I had been playing.
And this led to "Doin' What I Do" style of fiddle playin'........
And as they say.......The Rest Is History......
Sounds Like
Sounds Like???????
Well Hell.......I sound like me.......
Isn't that what it's all about??????
I was brought up in a small town in Northwest Ohio where I started my music studies at the age of 5 on the piano. I then moved to the Viola at the age of 8.
I have played in many orchestras throughout the Midwest and South as section and/or principal Violist. I have also studied with world renowned Violist Jerzy Kosmala at Louisiana State University and have shared the stage with the likes of Itzak Perlman, Pinkus Zukerman, Mark O'Connor, and Natalie McMaster, to name a few.
I was fortunate enough to make my Carnegie Hall debut in 1986 with the Baton Rouge Symphony and then to returned in 1987 as a member of the Louisiana State Chamber Ensemble. A total dream comes true.
In 1997, I discovered Celtic music, and for the first time in my career, picked up a fiddle and became a founding member of the Celtic band, Knot Fibb'n.
In 2001, I joined the band, Homeland. Where along with my friends, Scott McGillivray, Rob Koogler and Jeremy Washburn, try to put a little Rock and Roll in our Reels. We recorded 4 CDs, which have help take us all over the world.
Two years ago, I was fortunate to be hired on as Luthier for The Loft Violin Shop, in Columbus, Ohio. My job is restoration of Violins and Violas. So, I am very lucky. I now have a fiddle under my face 24 hours a day!
At the end of 2008, I had all intentions of retiring from the stage to start a Promotions and Booking Bussiness. But that thought lasted all of 3 weeks.
I was called out of retirement by John McBride, Bodhran player for the band, Roger Drawdy and The FireStarters. I agreed because this band is made up of wonderful musicians and Roger's songs are Melodic and beautiful.
So this is where you can find me now. Fiddle player for The FireStarters.
Our National Anthem. Played at the Dublin Pub. Thanks Skillz
