The lyric a little bit country, a little bit rock and roll could have been written about Edmonton, Alberta-based singer-songwriter Dahlia Wakefield.
Dahlia creates heart-felt lyrics, memorable melodies and pours her soul into vocal performances that immediately captivate listeners. Her new album 'DOWN THIS ROAD' which was written and recorded almost completely online, was produced by Jim Stoeber of Tegancat Music, and represents just over a year and a half of dedicated effort. It follows her well-received debut CD 'CLOSE TO HOME', both released on her independent record label, Squirrelly Girl Music.
With a strong, unique voice capable of interesting complexity, Dahlia spans easily from angelic and sensitive, to smooth and sensual, to raunchy and gutsy. Her musical direction explores popular avenues combining contemporary rock, pop, blues and a hint of modern country. If one must compare styles, the likes of Matchbox Twenty, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Alanis Morissette, and even Shania Twain come to mind. As to who has influenced her, she'd say everything from ABBA to Led Zeppelin. Her favorite bands/artists are Fleetwood Mac, Collective Soul, Bonnie Raitt, Amanda Marshall, Jann Arden, Faith Hill and many more. Dahlia's rich voice and contemporary-with-roots style allows her music to fit comfortably into almost any play-list or program.
Dahlia graduated with Distinction from the highly regarded music program at Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton where she was the recipient of a scholarship and an award. A performer since age 5 and a songwriter since age 15, Dahlia has placed as a high-ranking finalist in three international songwriting competitions, has received full-rotation radio play as well as global streaming airplay, and has landed on five compilation CDs.
Songs from 'DOWN THIS ROAD' have caught the attention of local radio and Dahlia, as always, is keeping busy with more songwriting, performances and promotions in Canada, the U.S., Europe and Australia.
With two full-length albums released, another one in the works and several accolades at her feet, Dahlia Wakefield is a rising star set to shine bright and long.
