Daikichi Amano（http://www.daikichiamano.com）likes to describe himself as the “modern day reincarnation of Katsuhika Hokusai”. This is not an empty boast.
Amano is one of the most important visual artists working in Japan today. His work has international appeal.
Amano reaches close to a quarter of a million people every month through his appearances in UK magazine Bizarre (the leading magazine of alternative culture), who feature Amano’s photographs and work prominently in every issue. This has won him a cult following across the world, with many fans in Europe, USA, Latin America and Australia. His photographs have also been seen and won the admiration of famous foreign artists such as Marilyn Manson, fashion photographer Jean-Baptiste Mondino and French film director Gaspar Noe (who personally requested Amano to appear in his next film). Famous UK photographer Perou the official photographer for Marilyn Manson, who has photographed Dita Van Teese and shot campaigns for Vivienne Westood said the following about Amano's work: "I'm amazed that something so immediately disturbing can keep me mesmerized by its beauty"
Amano’s photographs are drawn from his own private fantasies. Fantasies that are animistic, animalistic and atavistic in nature, but all-too-human in execution, evoking primal fears and desires. In Amano’s world, the human body is worshipped and admired for its awesome beauty but also deformed and fused with nature with wood, blood, bones, scales and feathers transforming it into an erotic grotesque. But these frightful dioramas are also cut through with the blackest humour. His images draw from traditional Japanese iconography and mythology. In one photograph, he turns a girls into a creature of legend the crane from the folk tale Tsuru no Ongaeshi, who sits behind a closed door weaving cloth from feathers plucked from her own body.
In Amano’s imagining of the story, the central character is neither woman nor bird but halfway in between a chimera both horrific and majestic in its beauty. Amano’s work trades on the overwhelming curiosity and desire to witness what is forbidden. He not only reveals what is behind the door but shows us what is beneath the skin. In doing so, he tells us something quite profound about the fraught and fearful relationship between humans, nature and sexuality.

しかし、これはただの自惚れではない。天野大吉は今 日本で活動しているアーティストの中で、最も重要な ビジュアルアーティストであり、彼の作品は日本国外 からも注目されている。
天野の作品は英国の月刊誌、ビザール（オルターナ ティブ・カルチャーの代表的雑誌）で毎号大きく取り上げられ、毎月約25万人の読者達に紹介されている。
これによって欧州、アメリカ、ラテンアメリカそして オーストラリアなど世界各国で、天野は国際的なカルトファンを獲得している。マリリン・マンソン、ジャ ン・バプティスト・モンディーノ、マリリン・マンソンの公式フォトグラファーであり、ディータ・ヴォ ン・ティーズの撮影、そしてヴィヴィアン・ウェストウッドの広告キャンペーンも手掛けた、英国の有名フォトグラファー、ペルーが天野大吉の作品について次の様なコメントを寄せている。“驚きなのは、（天野の作品は）こんなに生々しく不気味であるにも関わらず、その美しさは僕を魅了してやまないのです。”そしてギャスパー・ノエ監督（本人から 次作に出演してくれとリクエストされた）など、天野の作品は世界の著名アーチスト達の目にも触れ、絶賛されている。
天野大吉の写真群は彼の中に存在する、秘められた幻想の世界を描いている。 それはアニミズム的、獣性的、そして自然の中で生じる帰先遺伝的（アタビズム）なものに由来するファンタジーであり、それが人間としての本能的な恐怖と欲望を呼び起こす。天野大吉の世界にとって人間の体とは、その類い稀な美しさが讃えられる崇拝の対象であると共に、その肉体は自然界と融合し、奇形化したものである。 木、血、骨、鱗そして羽と融合した肉体は ‘エロ・グロ’へと変化し、そして最高に強烈なブラックユーモアが、このとてつもなく恐ろしいジオラマの中にくっきりと織り込まれている。
天野の映像の源流は日本文化の伝統的なアイコノグラフィーと神話にある。 彼は一枚の写真の中で、女の子を伝説の生き物に化えてしまう 。 それは昔話、‘鶴の恩返し’ 登場する、閉ざされた戸の向こうで、自分の体からむしり抜いた羽で織物をおっている一羽の鶴である。 天野が想像するこの物語の主人公は、女性でも、鳥でもないその中間の、おぞましくも誇り高く美しい、‘キマイラ’ なのだ。天野の作品は、禁じられたものを見たいという、圧倒的な好奇心と欲望の中で、その閉ざされた扉の向こう側にあるものをさらけ 出すだけでなく、皮膚の下に潜んでいる何かを私達に見せようとしている。 そうすることで 人間、自然そして性の間に存在する、妖気漂う恐怖に満ちた関係の深層に存在する何かを、私達に告げようとしているのである。
