Just in case you were in the area...
Hi guys, hope you don't mind me publicising this gig.. you see, I'm playing guitar on it, and I want some people to come!

At Grownup-Records, we are trying to build a roster of talented Welsh artistes, and this is our first launch party. If you would like to see what we do, and how it could affect you, pop down to the gig!

See you there.. Wear something loud!

I tell you what Daisy.. I bet he does remember you. He has just written a book, and I think all his college friends are in it!! Another friend of mine (Danielle Nicholls) who went to college with him, said he keeps mentioning all the people in his year that she had forgotten.

It would be great to see you in October, if I am around. Going to Florida with the family on 17th to the end of the month. If it's before or after, drop in. If you seriously need help, putting lyrics to music.. I am always available!! It seems to be one of the studio mainstays at the moment.

Great to hear from you, as always. Al x

Hi my darling, and hope you are well. Did you do the festival run?

Over at Shabbey Road we have been sweating and slaving over the new Boyd Clack mixes, from his fantastic new album 'Welsh Bitter'. Ceri Darknell, designer of the album cover likened him to Dylan Thomas.

It is a tough choice of which song, or songs to put up here. No one cut truly describes this album.I have chosen Phillip Reading, as it seems kooky enough to represent Boyd's eclectic style!

Let us know what you think!

Hi me darling, thanks for my birthday wishes! Hope all is good with you.

When I awoke, I was made aware that today was a 'special' day!

I was suddenly aware that i had been caught in the 'Cruel Jaws Of Time!

..curiously, I still feel quite good..
All the pics are in Al's 50th Birthday album!

Hi Daisy, just thought you could do with some midsummer greetings from wild and windy Wales!

Just had a fabulous session today with Chris Needs from Radio Wales.

He recorded some outrageous vocals for his charity single to raise awareness of diabetes, 'Sugar Sugar'. As he said 'I don't just get away with murder, I get away with genocide!!

This song is to be released as a single during September, on Grownup-Records/Music Wales, coupled with a great new version of 'You've Gotta Friend'.

&" ">..

Emily Langford helped me with a full Gospel choir, and then added some beautiful soaring solo parts to the last chorus. She was great to work with, and someone to watch for in the future!

Hope your week turns out to be as wacky as mine!

Not sure I have time to tour with you this summer.. can you get them to move the festivals till winter?!!

We have finally 'sold out', and succumbed to the lure of TV advertising!

When we started to send the mixes through to Paul Child, for his new album 'After All These Years', he sent us a text that said, 'this is an effing good album! Maybe we should do more with it...so we did.

After All These Years

Now admittedly, this ad won't set the world on fire, but my 12-year old daughter Lorna, said 'I really like it.. it stands out from the rest of the ads'. I have started to listen to her more, as she is often right on the mark.

Over at Shabbey Road, we are currently recording a version of Carole King's 'You've Got A Friend', for Radio Wales DJ Chris Needs. On hearing a first draft, Lorna said, 'yeah, I like it, but it needs one of those high wailing voices over the last chorus'. I gave it a try the next day, and sure enough, it added the extra dimension the last chorus needed. Damn!

Look out for my own version, on the Al Steele page.. complete with wailing high voice, courtesy of fantastic young vocalist, Emily Langford.

Oh Yeah!.. I'm with you, no camping for me. When I have a shower, I don't want to tramp back to a tent through 10 tons of mud.. does that make me a girl?!!.. probably.

Are you doing the festivals solo, or have you got a band? Love to catch you somewhere.

Hi Daisy.. how are you.. how are the books, how's married life?

I got spoiled on Fathers Day this year.

Leah managed to get in the all important 'guitar and chilli' before I'd even opened the envelope!.. and Lorna embellished with coloured 'guitar and chilli'.. seems to be a common thread!

I got new knives!! Whaddya mean, should have got a new shirt?!

Not to be outdone, Ceri got out her 'industrial strength' jet wash! She managed to cut grooves in the tarmac with it. She likes things really clean!!

Hope you have a great week. I am going to 3 great concerts this weekend. The Temptations Friday, James Taylor Sunday, and Steely Dan on Monday. Better earn some money fast!!

Dear Daisy,

Sorry I have been a little out of touch recently.. many converging deadlines!

I have just come back from a 3-day stint in Dubai. What a great city!

I was due to take out a 9-piece band to back 'The Sounds of The Supremes', but due to the 'credit crunch', we were cut to 5. Fortunately five people can still make a pleasing noise!

The venue was outdoors, and a great location..

..as was our hotel.

Check out the photo album for more pics.

The record company has been keeping us stupidly busy, but at this moment, I would say, 'that is good'!

Hope to get some more free time soon.. I could do with enough time to wash my hair!!!!

Grownup-Records bid to dominate first Wales.. and then the world is picking up pace!

..and one of the reasons we are so encouraged, is that we may finally be in a position to promote some of the acts that we have been championing, for so long. For example, Roosvelt, The Albino Frogs, Tyrone Marshall, and my long time friend and collaborator, Danielle Nicholls.

Now, whenever I leave one of my characteristically witty comments on her band page, it appears that I am the only one. So how about it? Ask to be a friend..leave an abusive comment. Hey, better to have a friend with no class, than no friend at all!!

Oh..and they are rather good, or I wouldn't have spent the last TWO YEARS OF MY LIFE, producing them!

Have a great weekend..cook something you've never cooked before..like Beef Wellington!

Hi Daisy

http://exposureroom.com/members/CraigSpenceley.asp.......

This was one in a series of 3 films for Craig Spenceley. The music was great fun to write, but it was quite difficult to get the mood of the recording just right. Featuring Mark Elton on violins and violas..and of course the remarkable Al Steele on an old Gibson J45 acoustic guitar.
It is great to see this film in it's final state!

Hi babe, hope you are good!

I think that all folks suffering the effects of the credit crunch, are blowing their money on making CD's at Shabbey Road!! Of course, my daughter Lorna, does not feel the effects of the credit crunch at all, so chose this (incredibly busy) time to record a couple of songs.

My daughter, Lorna, recording a couple of songs. She sang for 6 hours straight!

She sang for a solid 6 hours, until she was (relatively) happy with her performance. I have rarely seen a singer work so hard, without getting upset(!), especially with her father giving her advice.

..and she was still smiling!

Have also been recording a new song with Darren Parry. We put down a basic rhythm track last week, and he was also videoing with his new touch-screen phone/camera...maybe some footage will appear on Myspace!

Rather exciting developements over at Grownup Records, have been taking up my (and Nigel's) time. Will post a blog in the next day or so.

The new control room is FANTASTIC! We almost know how to work it as well.. have also bought a new Blue Sky monitoring system for Studio 2. The speakers sound incredible. Now Nigel and I are gonna fight over Studio 1&2.

Have a great week, Alx

Hope the wedding picture going doesn't mean you are getting divorced!..it's another book.
Sorry about my extended absence. All I have done is cook and work.

This was my Indian Buffet! Lots of garlic and chilli.

..and it is not the first time that Paella has grace my Myspace page. However, I have competition!

Ceri insisted that I post this trifle! Created by Ceri, Lorna and Leah.

..but the rising star must surely be Lorna's spaghetti bolognese.
It didn't hang around long enough to photograph!I did do some work as wel

Al Steele joins the Albino Frogs...for ONE NIGHT ONLY!!

I have just posted 2 new songs.
The first was written back in 1982, when I was heavily into Toto, Bruce Springsteen, and Rick Springfield. I was asked to re-record it for the Zoe McCulloch album Gypsy Noodle. Zoe performed it as an instrumental, but here is the vocal version of 'She's Gonna Be With Me'. A fine example of rock posturing!! Featuring Zoe on lead guitar, Nigel Hart/Gareth Kedward on keyboards, and my good self on guitars, bass, and all vocals.

Gareth also joined us in the band for the Chinese New Year, at the New Garden Restaurant in Aberkenfig.

Looks good huh?!!

The other new tune is a quite intospective piece, composed for the Griff-Rhys Jones BBC series 'A Pemprokeshire Farm'. It is called 'Water', and was inspired by.....water!

Hope you enjoy them, and have a great week,
Al

Hi me darling..hope you are good! Just been down to my local Tesco, and see lots of Grownup-Records CD's on the shelves! We have 3 CD's selling at the moment, but the one I am most excited about is 'Keep Wales Tidy'. Firstly because the title track deserves to become a Welsh classic (!), and secondly, because it includes the rock anthem 'Let The Dragon Roar', that I composed with Paul Child.

I had to use HQ mode to get it to play.

Also released this week on iTunes, are the 'Four Choir' singles. These guys are all battling for the highest chart position. They are also featured on the 'Keep Wales Tidy' album. Produced by Nigel Hart and my good self!

The last track on the album is 'Bluebird City', by my good friends 'Roosvelt'. Catch them live around the South Wales area, or buy the CD's from grownup-records. co. uk

We are shortly to be adding Paypal..'not before time' I hear you cry!

Have a great weekend, Al

Hey my dear, how is life? Hope 2009 is good so far.. I think your status said it was!

Looks like the passion for good food has been passed down a generation!

'LORNA'S NACHOS' They tasted good too!

Have been destroying the control room at Shabbey Road and giving Martin Cook our builder, a nightmare (see pictures on my page there). WE CAN REBUILD IT!..we hope..cause we have the BBC in to film next Tuesday!

The Grownup-Records album 'Keep Wales Tidy' has just gone off to the duplicators, after a couple of late nights. Have composed a new song for the release with Paul Child, called 'Let The Dragon Roar'. Probably on ITunes in about 6 weeks. Ceri has been busy designing the artwork for the album and the single. Paul and I also recorded a Springsteen-esque version of 'Working Man' ROCK ON!..

Happy New Year Daisy.. and hope you are off to a great start for 2009!

As always Cardiff centre is littered with ferris wheels, funfair rides, and an outdoor skating rink.

I had a gig, but managed to cook a Goulash before leaving.

Somewhat predictably, when I arrived back 4 hours later, everyone was still up..but surprisingly there was still some red wine left for me!

Hi Daisy,
Thank you for your kind Shabbey Road comment! Hope all is good with you!

Dave Daggers and I went out to see Roosvelt last night.

Needless to say, they were great. They played a lot of new material as well. Do we feel another album coming on? Check out Roosvelts own page on MySpace, and their vids on YouTube.

My 8-year old daughter Leah has been getting into telling jokes!

We are regularly invited to her 'Comody Nights'. I have no idea where she gets her 'lack of stage fright' from!

I am recording final vocals for the new Julie Steele album (no relation!) at Shabbey Road from tomorrow. We have 3 songs ready. The orchstral version of 'Blood Is Thicker Than Water' is very moving.

Hope you have as great a week as I am intending to have!
