'Around the World in 80 Howls'
Howl; is named after the Allen Ginsberg poem - I am a fan of American contemporary writing and the Beat poets.
Howl was born from the air of desperation I felt from sitting on the door of an East london club, feeling dismayed by the same twee, retro bullshit they played every night.
I felt there had to be more than this, more noise, more provocative inspiration I'd witnessed at events such as Silver Rocket, ATP and Upset The Rhythm, I thought I need to do this! So with the intention of creating a platform for left-field, interesting acts in an non-elitist environment I decided to start my own night.
And the name? It's not just an appreciation for the poet but a comment on the alarming comparisions I drew from that poem whilst watching un-named indie twaddle walking in and out of the toilet and club 'loooking for an angry fix' which is a downfall of existing in an area, which for the most part, is creative and inspiring.
I hope that in the short space of time Howl has been around I have achieved to host a number of eclectic and boundry pushing acts from grind-core, gabba, electronica, hard-core, doom, space rock, psyche and prog etc But whats in a name?
As long as there is boundry pushing, thought provoking acts out there and a place for them to exist and perform outside the corporate mainstream...I'm happy.

Who I'd like to meet:
..
King Crimson 'moonchild'
Call her moonchild
Dancing in the shallows of a river
Lovely moonchild
Dreaming in the shadow
Of the willow.
Talking to the trees of the
Cobweb strange
Sleeping on the steps of a fountain
Waving silver wands to the
Night-birds song
Waiting for the sun on the mountain.
Shes a moonchild
Gathering the flowers in a garden.
Lovely moonchild
Drifting on the echoes of the hours.
Sailing on the wind
In a milk white gown
Dropping circle stones on a sun dial
Playing hide and seek
With the ghosts of dawn
Waiting for a smile from a sun child.
We've never been able to quite pin down exactly what it is that The Hunter Gracchus do, which is a wonderful thing. A shifting unit with Syed Kamran Ali, Fiona Marshall and Jon Marshall at the core, they have recently settled into a fairly stable unit of six, but it's hard to know how long that'll last. Still, while it does, it's producing all manner of magical and highly unexpected performances. The one captured here was recorded at the band's practice room cum gig space, Fagin's Hideout/The Furniture Makers and is a less blistering freakout than some of their recent output, preferring to quietly explore every nook of tonal space. It simmers rather than erupts and, the longer you become immersed in it, the less aware you become of the passage of time. It's a recording that feels like it should go on forever and, when it does come to a close, the silence is shocking. In a time when it's all too easy for a group of improvisers to just go full-tilt in some euphoric pursuit, the Hunter Gracchus provides us with a glowing alternative that draws us slowly in and drowns our senses. This is truly awesome.
Peeesseye I Woke Up and Drank a Bottle of Cheap Kojak CDR
Peeesseye made the scene at Dylan Nyoukis's Colour Out of Space festival last summer and hopped over to Manchester to play a show at the Town Hall Tavern, the recording of which forms the content of this incredible slab of dense droning harmonium, scraping, buzzing, subtly soloing guitar and pulse-free, scatter-drumming. We can't recommend this enough. Limited to 80 copies.
hey y'all come and check these guys out from baltimore. way to get loose on a friday night! + i play alone but still bring the dirt pop glistening with noise sprinkles x A
Fresh from their show at Barcelona's Primavera festival, Teeth Mountain will be unleash their heavy concoction of new-wave tribal psychedelic sounds on Cube, using driving percussion like other bands use guitars.
Deep, thick layers of rhythms and overlays of ambiance, from the gritty to the sublime, this eight-piece outfit create a controlled mayhem of weighty neo-tribal trance music, part Indian, part African, part Balkan, and part Baltimore, that transforms consciousness and carries the group and their listeners to higher states.
The Wire magazine recently praised their 'refusal to acknowledge any kind of destination point for their jamming, achieving a convincing state of suspension throughout, helped by some engagingly forceful drumming.'
Teeth Mountain pummel with noise and drums but are always inviting and joyous, a new wave of tribal sounds in underground music. Be prepared to witness a heady, peyote-voodoo brew, getting you out of your seats and on your feet. Teeth Mountain will enthrall you in a rhythmic, musical spell.
