As rap music becomes over saturated with gangster clichés, party rap child prodigies, and self-proclaimed “kings,” a group has arisen that refuses to conform to the stereotypes of the rap genre. Hailing from Youngstown, Ohio, Da Kreek is an alternative hip-hop group that is blurring the lines of the hip-hop genre. Drawing from a variety of genres, such as jazz, blues, soul, and funk, they are successfully crafting a unique and innovative new sound.
Da Kreek's newest full length CD titled STILL ILL. The CD pays homage to the Quentin Tarantino film Kill Bill as it contains samples from the film's original soundtrack. STILL ILL is a display of cocky, clever, and witty lyricism in combination with stylish and swaggering production. The new sound forged by these two masters of ceremonies is shaping the future for the genre.
"The album is crazy!" Mello Dee exclaims. "We worked real hard to make it stand out and different. But at the same time, still make it hip hop."
Da Kreek is a hip-hop duo consisting of rappers and producers DTown and Mello Dee. Together, the duo has received various award nominations for their extensive work in the genre since their formation in 2006. These nominations included HHB Series Best Group (2008), Ohio Hip Hop Awards Best Group (2008), and Ohio Hip Hop Awards Best New Group (2007). The group is also renowned for their live shows in which they interact with the crowd.
"It's about maintaining the elements," DTown says. "A lot of these guys focus more on jewelry than showmanship and lyrics. That's what sets us apart."
Da Kreek finished recording STILL ILL and launched the CD in the fall of 2008, following their Ohio Hip Hop Award Nomination for Best Group. The CD features exclusive production from DTown and Mello Dee. "STILL ILL" is a solid release that should be entered into every hip hop enthusiasts collection.
