Beyond music/art/film stuff? K. I'm a fan of stand-up comedy--not "comedy clubs" per se (I dig that, just haven't gone in a while), but films/videos/DVDs of cutting-edge mutants like Eddie Izzard, Dave Chappelle, David Cross, Sarah Silverman, etc. (And "old school" wordsmith comics like Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, and George Carlin.) Time permitting, I might hit the Hollywood Bowl, Dorothy Chandler, unconventional and/or just plain "out there" plays, etc. Karaoke is cool! So is the beach (paddleball, frisbee, rollerblading, chillin'). My BBQ bashes are somewhat infamous... I play badminton too, sometimes, and have been known to brutalize myself Bikram Yoga style... I dig going "garage sale-ing" as well; damn near everything I got that's cool/funky, I grabbed from a garage sale at some point, it seems.
Music
BIG Jeff Buckley and Brian Wilson nut; all forms of artistic/unpredictable music (Miles Davis, Chopin, Stravinsky, Bartok, Mike Patton / Mr. Bungle, Trent Reznor / Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, Jimmy Gnecco / Ours, King's X, Primus, Fishbone, Bjork, Jon Brion, Elliott Smith, John Frusciante, Ani DiFranco, Aimee Mann, Bobby McFerrin, Danny Elfman, John Zorn, Karen and Richard Carpenter, Chet Baker, ol' Spike Jones, Victor Borge, this list is endless...) are up my alley. I'll spare ya by not listing the 10 billion guitar players and other instrumentalists--in every genre--that I love, respect, and am influenced by ;-)
Personal music-wise (www.intimateaudio.com), I've had an all original CD in the works for a while. It's full band stuff, but I'm playing and singing everything (except for *gasp!* strings on one song). I think the guitar parts are pretty cool and different--acoustic and electric on everything, with some semi-abnormal vocal harmonies. The only recent stuff I've recorded that's "out," that's remotely close, is THIS stuff (that's just a scaled-down backing track, with drums, bass, electric geetars, and other stuff removed, but it's kinda purty--in a spooky way!). This new disc will be released sometime in 2009 (12 songs).
You can also hear me shred up a storm--"New Age" style--on David Pritchard's Acoustic Guitar Quartet's UNASSIGNED TERRITORY, released in 1999 on Zebra Records (Warner/Elektra/Atlantic).
Feel like digging deeper into my musical mind? You may find THIS INTERVIEW to be an interesting read :-)
Movies
Fave flick? Impossible to answer, but here are a few: Annie Hall, Pulp Fiction, The Pianist, Holy Grail, Waiting for Guffman, Memento, Chocolat, The Shining, Fight Club, uhhhhm.... American Psycho, Amelie, Birdcage, A Clockwork Orange, Taxi Driver, Fargo, A Simple Plan, Terry Gilliam's stuff (Brazil, 12 Monkeys, Fisher King, etc.), Godfather I and II, GoodFellas, Spinal Tap, Rocky Horror, Pink Floyd's The Wall, all those Wallace and Gromit claymation films... Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I Heart Huckabees, Magnolia, Happiness... various Tim Burton-isms (Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach, etc.), Citizen Kane, Rebel Without a Cause, some Audrey Hepburn films, Sinatra stuff (Manchurian Candidate, From Here to Eternity, etc.), the Graduate, Pedro Almodovar flicks (Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down, etc.), Amadeus, Schindler's List... On the lighter side? The Jerk, Airplane, Ace Ventura, Cheech and Chong's Next Movie... Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!
Television
Tube-wise, I'm a BIG fan of Real Time w/Bill Maher. AND I actually kinda *like* American Idol (for comedic value). Other than that, reality TV makes me ILL. Haven't watched sitcoms much lately (or TV at all, for that matter), but used to love Seinfeld, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Sex in the City, Sopranos, etc. Mr. Bean is KING!
Books
For the last thousand years, it seems, I've only read recording/songwriting/biographical books and/or magazines.
Heroes
Brian Wilson, Miles Davis, Jeff Buckley, Michael Jordan, Jim Carrey... Jon Brion would be my most recent addition to this list. Basically, people who are virtuosos at their craft, continuously evolving from a life of dedication to their art. I'd say some of my close, personal friends fit in this category as well--including the ol' parentals! (My pops passed away in 1995. STOP SMOKING, retards!!!!) R.I.P. definitive hero, Miles Levin.
About me: Profession-wise??? I'm the (former... see blog above) West Coast Editor of Guitar One Magazine, teach private guitar lessons, music theory, ear training, sight reading, Jimi Hendrix-style rhythm guitar improvisation, guitar/vocal accompaniment, and a couple other classes at Hollywood's Musician's Institute, and write guitar instructional books, among other things. I'm also an independent musician--soon to unleash some nutty musical nuggets (me playing guitar, bass, real acoustic drums, piano, mandolin, accordion, voices) for your (hopeful) listening pleasure (12-song disc due sometime in 2009)!!!
Personality-wise??? If we met, and you spoke with a Scottish accent, you might say I was "fookin' foony!" (Here's a 100% improvised LIVE SAMPLE of my musical humor, for starters.) For what it's worth, I've also been told I'm open-minded, goal-oriented, a little bit nutty (or was it loopy?), honest, tolerant/accepting of people's differences (but pretty intolerant of drama and BS), optimistic, and approachable... Oh yeah, I also love parentheses. You want the full skinny? I'll dish it to ya directly if you write ;-) Dale Turner
Who I'd like to meet: Friends-wise? Anyone who's cool, who is into music that matters. (Subjective??? Perhaps--but not to me!!) Among other attributes, people with some sense of "awareness"--how their behavior affects others around them--would also be nice. For instance: If you're the type that habitually bitches at waiters/waitresses, we most likely can't be buds!!! (*sniffle*) Or if you're a dude with a million "ab" shots on your page. I'll just feel inferior... y'know, 'cause I'm jealous 'n' stuff. Dork.
I eat flakes for breakfast.
Networking-wise? I guess the same would apply, provided the stuff I threw down up North of here (and elsewhere) is actually relevant to you. OOOOOGABOOOGA!
BONUS: Below is a live video (shot June 2004) of me playing Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" in its entirety. This is the only film clip (audio is straight off the board) I have of me doing this song. I was a little bit sick, so my throat explodes during the high parts, but it's definitely pretty funny--at least the "solo" and "opera" sections!! I hope it makes you laugh!
..

Thanks for your time and patinece hope to see you and all of your frineds there. Thanks for your support!! See ya at the show !!!!
Sorry for the seemingly late reply, this is my second attempt as the first typically failed to send... the MySpace gremilins are working overtime in my machine.
I was delighted to learn you have now reached the final mixing stage of your new album. (Do they even call them albums anymore??!! Lol I dunno...)
I'm sure the final mix will be much closer to what you intended & all will be sonic bliss. Congratulations on finishing what I'm sure has been a labor of love & a personal milestone. Can't wait to hear the drumming!
Thanks for the good wishes for my new boy, it was kind of you Dale :-)
I have to confirm that having a child is the biggest time consumer ever invented! I'm sure you already know that but you have to "live" it to fully appreciate it!
Be warned, ideally you have to plan like never before!
Thanks also for the information on the Tuck Andress version of "Over The Rainbow." I made sure to listen to it from a quality stream since the Youtube versions are so hard to hear.
It really is the most beautiful arrangement. He deserves the credit he gets, alhough I admit I had never heard of him prior. Yet another amazing player!!
I did finally finish my own take on it... at a price. I've burnt myself out with the effort! I haven't picked up my guitar in weeks. I'm sure I will get my enthuisiasm back eventually... how you work as hard as you do?
I'm still trying to meet other players when I can. I think talking to others is just as important as trying to play together. Some of the stories I've heard are sobering. Nobody appreciates a musician!
Well with all this guitar speak, I might even tune up later ;-)
I'm doing fine. I had a brief bout with some muscle troubles from over trilling and rocking out without breaks (subluxing ulnar nerve as well, but I'll get that fixed soon and be as good as gold - wearing a brace at night currently). I'm a little wiser now and keep stretching and maintaining my health with some biking and good diet. Apparently, the closer you get to 30, the harder it is to maintain. It's all worth the trouble as long as I get to play guitar for a living.
I haven't checked myspace much either, but I figured you'd get around to it (obligations keeping you busy).
You should know I use "crackhead" a lot now in my vocabulary and try to instill a bit of Tuner'isms in my lessons when I get a chance. Thanks for teaching a really cool level three theory class. As far as me being missed, I could probably count on one hand the folks that might actually miss me.
I'm hoping to do well in Athens, GA when I move there in a few months. Hoping for plenty of lessons and gigs in my future.
Keep on rockin' those mean blues licks on the keys (ear straining)!
US Tour w/ Between The Buried And Me, Cynic & Devin Townsend! Jan 17th @ House Of Blues in Los Angeles! Be there! Pre-sale tickets are also now on sale, if you plan on coming I highly suggest getting them now! Available at ticketmaster. Links on our page!

Thanks for the reference. I really appreciate it. Recently, I hooked up with a pop-rock group called Skyrocket Love through one of Barry Squire's auditions. We used a Filmit student for our first video that should be on myspace.com/skyrocketlove shortly. If you get a chance let me know what you think. I'm still psyched to hear your album. Let me know when its available. Keep in touch.
How's it going? There is a free track available for you at the moment on our myspace page. Just click the FREE DOWNLOAD box at the top of the page and enter a valid email to download the tune. How cool is that!
Have a great week and thank you very much for being electronically connected to us as friends and fans.
Just stopping by to say hi! Check out the new tracks from our album, "Truth Untold", on our page or at evictedband.com. Let us know what you think. We've also got some new videos up on youtube.com/evictedlive. ROCK ON!!!!
GIT grad here, just read about you in GP! I am playing a show and was wondering if you'd like to come out? I'd put you on the list. Maybe Bill L wants to go too?
check me out and if you like i would be honored to have you in the audience:)
Hey, Dale. Got the October Guitar Player and I wanted to mention I really like the first intro lick. :-) Going through the others just now. Some of them will come in handy for a lesson this upcoming week. Thanks!
Just dropping by to let you know that I have a new album out entitled 'Anitya.' It is currently available for download from Amazon.com. It is album consisting of ten acoustic folk rock songs with traditional east asian influences. It centers around the idea of anitya or impermanence in Buddhism, and the interaction between failure and ideals. So take some time and enjoy the new songs! peace,
