Notes by Dalena on her "Treasure Merchants" Site:
Merchant Ships on the Horizon, Can barely see through this dense fog. It's chilly here on the docks, but worth the wait for new treasures..
Hot tea warms my hands, gentle waves dance around the moored giants. Longshormen gathered & ready. All of us waiting in quiet expectation...
Dawn breaks on the horizon, massive sails appear rippling in the wind. The scents of cinnamon, coffee, and exotic spices come to me as a gift...
My waiting, rewarded. I am in awe like a small child. Soon I shall hold such treasures as I never dared imagine, in my trembling hand...
The morning rays pierce my blue eyes, awash in gold. Sea birds above sing for my joy. While I wait in tremulous wonder, as the wind guides my treasure to me....
A ship, of shimmering gold, her sails… fresh like morning cream. My eyes do not betray my heart.. ‘tis the wind that blurs my sight… ‘tis the wind.
Well known in Asian communities worldwide, Dalena is a blonde, blue eyed American singer best known for her ability to sing in ten languages, with three dialects of Vietnamese and Chinese being her specialties.
(Please click on the tracks above to hear Dalena's original music, or Dalena singing in Chinese or Vietnamese.)
Dalena, an American of Scotch, Irish, Norwegian, and Dutch descent was born in Indiana and moved to Florida as a child. She began her singing career at the tender age of three years old when the church that she attended asked her to sing in front of their entire congregation. Dalena enthusiastically agreed, and a career was born.
Dalena was already singing harmonies by the time she reached the third grade. At ten years of age Dalena starting writing her own poems and songs and taught herself to play the guitar at thirteen.
she performed consistently for community events and church functions, and at the age of sixteen, was performing with just her guitar in restaurants in downtown Orlando and surrounding areas.
An avid Martial Arts fan, Dalena happened to rent a Jacky Chan movie and was hooked, but wanted to hear the real language being spoken instead of the over dubbing of English.
She sought out an Asian grocery store and found lots of movies to rent that were in the original Mandarin and Cantonese languages, and that’s where the love story with Asian music began.
Dalena found herself renting movies every week and became a fan of many Asian movie stars and singers. She also found that she was able to pick up the languages that she was hearing by following along with the English translations.
She fell in love with the music, started collecting Chinese music in Mandarin and Cantonese and was soon singing along to them.
She sang one of the Cantonese songs she’d learned for a Vietnamese restaurant owner who spoke both Vietnamese and Chinese.
He was amazed that she sang with very little American accent and decided to put Dalena on stage. He sent her home with some Vietnamese music, and six months later, Dalena Performed for the first time in Orlando in Chinese, Vietnamese, Spanish, French and English.
Dalena was invited to sing in Canada and then at a nightclub in California. As word about Dalena spread among the Asian communities worldwide, she was faced with a decision. Go home to Florida and her day job, or move to California and begin her singing career in earnest.
Dalena quit her job, bought a one way ticket to California and with only her mother to accompany her; she stepped into a world she could never have envisioned before.
“I always knew I’d be singing” says Dalena, “I just thought it would be in my own language."
It was really a crazy time for me, because I knew nothing about the Vietnamese people or culture, and I knew nothing about the entertainment business really. I was a stranger to California and to everything I was doing.
When I look back on it I think “gosh, I did that? Was I crazy?” but I just knew I had to sing this music and I was determined to do it somehow. My mother was my guardian angel to be sure. I couldn’t have done it without her, or my continuing faith in God that this was where I was supposed to be for some reason."
Dalena has since made hundreds of appearances on stage nationally and all around the world. She visited Vietnam for the first time in 2000, and has returned several times on tour. She has recorded many solo albums and has been featured on various other artist recordings.
Most notably, Dalena is known for her performance with Vietnamese Singer Henry Chuc in a production of The Phantom of the Opera at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, sung in English and Vietnamese for the first time.
She is also known for bringing a jazz, R&B sound to many old Vietnamese standards, surprising her audiences by breathing new life into old songs with her emotional and poignant phrasing, and her resonant lower tones.
A special treat for Dalena's Vietnamese audiences though, is her ability to accurately execute some of the more challenging, traditional folk songs that few native singers can produce, with the intricate lilting phrasings and trills required for this type of singing.
Dalena is a published songwriter and poet, and has written for several Vietnamese recording labels, translating Vietnamese songs into English.
Some of her original compositions have been translated into Vietnamese as well for several labels including two Christian albums for World Agape.
Dalena has been featured on CNN Special Report, Time Magazine, The New York Times, The LA Times, The Orange County Register, The Miami Herald, The Orlando Sentinel, The Dallas Morning News, and many, many more.
She continues to sing and perform worldwide, is working on a book, and recently opened an online specialty gift shop inspired by her travels and love of story writing.

“Dance”
“The expression of love, grace an elegance A movement of intimacy, empowerment, romance Riding the crest of an ocean wave Gliding through the air on a breezy day My body on Earth my soul reaches away To Heaven. The religion of rhythm A moth to a candle A key to a slave of Pleasure and pain I take my first emancipated steps Freedom This is my chance. That’s where I go When I Dance.”
