Acknowledged as one of the greatest interpreters of the cello, Jacqueline du Pré's career was cut short by multiple sclerosis, which forced her to cease performing at the age of 28, and led to her premature death. Following her death, her older sister Hilary and younger brother Piers wrote a book about their family life - "A Genius in the Family". It was the basis for the film "Hilary and Jackie", both of which aroused fierce controversy.

Gustav Mahler's "Symphony No. 9" was the last symphony that he completed. He died in May 1911, without ever having heard it performed. The work's ending has for many years been interpreted as being a self-conscious farewell to the world.
